My wife and her friend have taken over the cooking in a pub
and I was wondering if anyone could recommend an insurance company.

Depending on the arrangement and the contractual position with the premises owner/business operator, your wife may already be covered. It is good business practise for businesses (i.e. the pub operator in this context) to ensure these issues are fully resolved before starting the enterprise.

A good place to start is a local Insurance Broker, they are excellent places for good, solid advice on such matters - perhaps better than filling out forms online.

Towergate insurance, direct line, or prestige insurance should all give you a quote, but check first if indeed you are covered by the pubs insurance!

If they are operating under a franchise agreement for example they are probably not covered by the pubs insurance and should have their own but may be difficult to get just the public liability in case they poison someone.

The solution is to have a "package" policy covering their stock and equipment etc and these policies usually include the public/products/employers liability free of charge and are much easier to obtain as most major UK Insurers have such policies but seek the advice of a Broker as suggested by Tobias as costs and minimum premiums vary enormously.

Cheers for the replies The pubs insurance does not cover the cooking. Think I'll do as mentioned and head off to the nearest broker as I've filled out a few forms and get a reply from them saying that they don't do this type of insurance.

In The Apprentice tonight they take over a pub and turn it into a themed restaurant for one day. (BBC1 9pm, repeated tomorrow)
