My Thai wife (British Citizen)is asking about whether there are any circumstances in which her brother (aged 24) resident in Thailand would be able to come to work in UK. Adice or help please.

He would need a work permit.
See:-

Guidance - Work permit holders (INF 13)

Chapter 17 - Entry for employment: work permits

Note that he doesn't apply for the permit, his employer in the UK does. So first he will need to find such an employer.

N.B. One of the requirements for a work permit is that the employer has been unable to fill the position from within the EU.

Unless, that is, he is to take up a job for which a work permit is not required because there is special provision (or a concession) for entry to the UK for such employment.

See:-

Guidance - Permit free employment (INF 14)

Chapter 18 – Entry for non-work permit employment

If he was a student he could study and do 25 hours a week work.

If he was Thai Chef he may have a chance in so far that is a specialist skill

But generally he will face an uphill struggle

Actually holders of a student visa are limited to 20 hours per week in term-time, but their working hours are not limited outside of term-time.

Indeed, but if unskilled there is no hope for him getting a WP.

What about Nursing?

The girl I'm chatting to on MSN is a nurse and the conversation has touched light heartedly a couple of times on the future and her coming to the UK.

Assuming she can improve her English skills to an acceptable level is it realistic - given the presence of Filipnos, is it realistic to get a WP?

My understanding is that the situation regarding nurses is that it is much more difficult now that a year or so ago. Most nursing grades are no longer on the list of shortage occupations, so unless she has particular skills such as theatre nurse it might prove difficult.

Also she would need to demonstrate competence in English, and be mentored of a while before getting full registration with the Nursing Council. Difficult to get an employer to act as mentor.

Also worth pointing out that those Filipinas that were so welcomed 4 years ago are now being told that their work permits are not being renewed and they have to leave the country. This includes those whom have brought their families across, obtained mortgages and are settled for all intents and purposes.

Regarding being a nurse here , NMC will require higher level of English skills as IELTS score not less than 7 from 9 band and very difficult to find adaptation courses/places now.More further, the UK goverment indicated that Employers must employ those nurses who are from EU country before anywhere els, so the chances is very minimal but not impossible.

Thanks Teansri and others.

Sometimes I think I need the English lessons sometimes when I'm chatting with her. More than once I've been reaching for my dictionary when she's thrown a medical term into the conversations. So far I've had dyspnoea, dysmenorrhea.......

But in all seriousness since I plan to to a CELTA next month and teach I should be able to help her get up to standard.
