I planted a tiny papaya seedling round the back of our house 10 months ago. It's 4 metres tall now and has more than a dozen large fruit growing from it. It's going to get a lot bigger too. I think, depending on the variety, they can grow up to 10 metres tall.

Eeker

The only thing that has outgrown it is the 1 metre tall banana shoot I planted next to it (a little too close) around the same time which is now level with the roof of the house. Will have to wait a little longer for the fruit from that though.

Can't you stunt their growth and still get the fruit. Out of interest, one local member of the Thai/Welsh community tried growing from seed, but they didn't even sprout in his greenhouse - and he is a pretty good gardner. Anyone know how to propagate the seeds ?

Yes, if you lop the top off when it gets a couple of metres high it should branch out and grow a little shorter as a result.

No idea, I just get free seedlings given to me by locals who do. LOL

These fellas in the States seem to know what they're talking about:

Germinating papaya seeds

I have a lot of seeds coming up at the moment, planted them directly into a grow bag i empted out into a container, kept them pretty dry avoiding direct sunlight seems to have done the trick

Thanks for the seeds link. I see that the guy with the jungleseeds co hasn't managed to get any fruit off of his Papaya to date. It will be interesting to see how your results turn out. Keep us informed. Smiler
