I certainly do not dispute the fact that a work permit is required by law to legitimately work in Thailand. Plus the occupations you refer to, called Protected Occupations being

Under Thai Law BE2522 foreigners are prohibited to engage in any of the following. It should be noted that the law does NOT define work as doing something in return for financial or any other reward.

1. Manual work
2. Work in agriculture, animal husbandry, forestry or fishery excluding specialized work in each particular branch or farm supervision
3. Bricklaying, carpentry or other construction works
4. Wood carving
5. Driving mechanically propelled carried or driving non-mechanically-propelled vehicle, excluding international aircraft piloting
6. Shop attendance
7. Auction
8. Supervising, auditing or giving service in accountancy excluding internal auditing on occasions
9. Cutting or polishing jewelry
10. Haircutting, hairdressing or beauty treatment
11. Cloth weaving by hand
12. Weaving of mate or making products from reeds, rattan, hemp, straw or bamboo pellicle
13. Making of Sa paper by hand
14. Lacquer ware making
15. Making of Thai musical instrument
16. Niello ware making
17. Making of products from gold, silver or gold-copper alloy
18. Bronze ware making
19. Making of Thai dolls
20. Making of mattress or quilt blanket
21. Alms bowls casting
22. Making of silk products by hand
23. Casting of Buddha images
24. Knife making
25. Making of paper of cloth umbrella
26. Shoemaking
27. Hat Making
28. Brokerage or agency excluding brokerage or agency in international trade business
29. Engineering work in civil engineering branch concerning designing and calculation, organization, research, planning, testing, construction supervision or advising excluding specialized work
30. Architectural work concerning designing, drawing of plan, estimating, construction directing or advising
31. Garments making
32. Pottery or ceramic ware making
33. Cigarette making by hand
34. Guide or conducting sightseeing tours
35. Street Vending

37. Drawing and twisting silk-thread by hand
38. Office or secretarial work
39. Legal or lawsuit services

And this being quite accepted I still ask what practicable experience do you have to give information, after all any body can read from documents and books but practicable and currently in practice methods vary greatly from what is written in law, as no doubt even you will appreciate business is not conducted the same in the East as it is in the West, an example being when in the West has it ever been possible to have a law so flagrantly ignored, for example prostitution which is illegal in Thailand yet conducted on such a wide scale.
I agree as you say "the law is the law" however in Thailand there is a very big "BUT", and, this is what I mean when I ask about your own practical experience of the matter in question

Thats me in the doo daa then! (ref earlier pics)

Whilst I agree that I cannot be employed in farming, In my defence, just helping a bit now and again is hardly "work" as in day in day out, But I do enjoy lifting "evy fings", (no spelling mistake there) That's what you do when you are a "fick kid", It is a bit of exercise. I know that legally I can't work, but helping out a bit, not every day, is a bit different.Take fishing for example, which I enjoy, I caught about 400 bahts worth of fish, put them in a keep net to weigh later, ( for fun, using rod and line) then the MIL sells them, Doe's that constitute work?, I don't know, but AKAIK, to be employed in farming is certainly, illegal for a farang, The farm itself is far from prying eyes, but I am mindful of the fact that anyone jealous enough of our setup could, try to make a few waves, but to be honest nobody and I mean nobody here either gives a damn, or realises that there are indeed work restrictions for a farang, that is here, and probably not the same in BKK or other cities, but out in the real boonies people just get on with it.Looking at it with English common sense, "helping out" isn't work, but how far is too far?

Can I cut my own grass with a mechanical machine, i'e ride on mower, or a pair of nail scissors? afterall the grassed area is 2 rai?

So you to stop Argue and enjoy my experiences, this was and is a very light hearted thread about "MY" time in LOS, please don't lets spoil it for other readers,
And you MR C, ...I will see you in thew morning for brekkers, BTW do you still have the pic of the last brekkie I had with you, fag aswell?

Well today, it was hot again, waited around for the vet and gov't official to turn up, meanwhile, Not I, but some of the inlaws, built me a little jetty thing for fishing on, Wink
Then an English mate turned up and we chewed the fat a bit,
My gardener/handyman turned up to cut my grass, I have no work permit and don't know if I am allowed to cut my own grass could it be construde as work? again, I don't know also the grass area is 2 rai, and I don't want to do it!
Then I came home, just now, and I have broken the "I am not having a Leo tonight thing"
Ah well lets see what t'morrow brings.
cheers

I'm there

And with that the matter is clarified and resolved.

I certainly won't be advocating people use underhanded or unlawful means to gain employment or work in Thailand. Whilst there may be widespread abuse or the rules, that doesn't mean it is right.

Thailand often turns a blind eye to the unlawful activities of certain individuals - for as long as it suits them. But once some local with clout wants to make a point or 'save face' then there is no equitable way to resolve matters if the individual concerned has relied on the blind eye of the law to work and suddenly finds himself up poop creek without a paddle.

Unlike yourself, I am no expert on Pattaya or its modus operandi but I have heard the stories of falang who have 'owned' bars in Pattaya (and other places) and have worked there for years only to fall out with a local plod and suddenly find himself without a bar and a deportation order.

The law is the law and in Thailand it appears certain officials will use it or abuse it to suit their own whims.

By all means work illegally but if you do be prepared for the consequences when those that matter fall out with you or suddenly don't like the look of your face.

Ha ha, yep, nice to have some banana fritters with your Sunday roast wasn't it Merv, maybe that's where he got the idea of marmalade and black pudding.

I've had breakfast at Mervs and it's great, not quite on a par with The Ritz on Soi Yamoto but not far off.

Actually Ian, we sample weighed a few yesterday and the average weight was 2 kilo, that is 2 kilo from birth, now 34 days old, another 9 to go, should be pushing around 2.5 kilos per bird , which will be a good profit.

Well today it was hot, went round to Mervyn's and knocked him out of bed, I was starving, Had the usual complimentry full English, and fag.
Then I popped into the office to see this gov't bloke, about the new EU regulations and what we must do to bring the farm upto standard, not just our farm but everybody has to conform to EU regs,if you want to export. Anyway's he wasn't there, but said earlier that he would be Roll Eyes
Came away with his number rang him and hopefully we will see him tomorrow. Went into town got a few supplies, forgot to get some Leo, thought of nipping to the local "offy" for some, but I can't be bothered, have got one bottle in the fridge, so I reckon I will find a straw!.
No fishing today, to busy chatting with Merv and generally doing nowt.
God I'm bored Big Grin
Edit,
just been to the fridge, and have 3 Leo's ,kin fantastic. Jump

Just ask Mol ...I mean Mot, sorry for the spelling misatake. Big Grin

Saha have just altered the way that we make money, basically they charge us more for the food, but give us more baht per kilo, added to that we now have the birds for 43 days, instead of 38, 39,or 40 days. The added extra days is where they eat more food and put on a lot more weight, We reckon on 42/43 days as being the optimum, weight per bird Vs food cost. Which should generate a 6 figure net profit. But don't forget we have lost, or will have lost near on 1000 birds, most died within the first few days, so they didn't eat a lot, so no money wasted on fattening them up. If things go to plan we should cash in 11200 birds at 34 baht per kilo x 2.5 kilo per bird gross profit. Yes gross profit, knock off the food costs, staff salaries, elecy, gas, and water, It sure pulls a big chunk off the top line.

Anyway off down the farm in a minute, gonna check em, see that they are ok,
Mervyn will hopefully be nipping over with some supplies, and some bait later,
My mate is coming over at the weekend, he lives in UK but he works in the oil buis in Thailand and Canada, does a lot of buissness with Chevron, and it looks like I have free tickets to the Singapore F1 GP in September, so Colin, if your reading.. Thumbs Up
Anyways got to move, see you later chaps.
