Apparently there are 41,000 British who have emigrated to Thailand. An interesting report here, British emigration

Quote from the IPPR,
The number of British citizens who chose to go permanently abroad doubled from 53,000 in 2001 to 107,000 last year - some 2,000 people a week. ........................................................................................................................ Thats not surprising the way this Country is going. I would have been gone years ago, if I could afford it. Cheers/Kob Khun, Ron-Tik. |

Lets keep this in perspective, there are still more immigrants arriving than emigrants leaving so it can't be all that bad, despite the torrential rain. Peter |

Lets get some perspective here. There are 30 times more Brits in Australia than in Thailand and 200 times more pensioners.

Let's hope the country you emigrate to has such a tolerant attitude. |

The one I am going to has no free health care, no chance of work, have to leave every so often to renew visa, no chance of becoming Nationalised, and it's still a million times better than this rat's nest we call "Great Britain".Can somebody remind me why we call it Great Britain. I'm there Bryn |

How do you work that out? Less poverty? Not as corrupt? More opportunities? Don't talk daft man. Had it not been for the opportunities this great country has afforded you then you would have no chance of emmigrating and living in luxury in LOS.... do not forget that. What chances have Thais or for that matter 99% of the world's population got to live such a life in the UK? Oh and I don't mean to knock LOS, indeed I would hope to be living there mtself in a couple of years. Peter |

Why haven't you done it then? Many people from Thailand have made there own opportunities too , haven't they.? I made my own opportunities, as many Thai's have done and been successful It is only because I have got off my arse and been successful that I can go to live in LOS at the old age of 41. Why hasn't everyone else who frequent this site done the same???????????? answer..... It isn't that easy to do is it. You get locked into the rat race, must work to pay tax, must work to pay bills, nowt left at the end of the month. Having to wait until retirement before daring to dream about living in LOS. Great Britain my arse. Not as corrrupt, your having a laugh, 200 baht to the BIB for speeding or £60.00 here, £60.00 fine is corruption just legallised. More poverty , less poverty, there is still poverty. I'm there Bryn |

The full name of this country is The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Great Britain is a geographical term referring to the island of Britain to distinguish it from the other, smaller, Britain, now known as Brittany. Being caught breaking the law and then paying a bribe to a police officer to avoid prosecution is corruption. Being caught breaking the law and then paying a fine is not corruption, it is punishment. If you don't want to be punished, don't break the law. |

AFAIK The BIB ask for 200 baht and issue you a ticket for speeding, or they may not issue you a ticket for speeding and still charge you 200 baht. Which ever is fine with me. Who am I to argue at the side of the road? I'm there Bryn |

Whether paying a bribe or a fine, both can be avoided if you drive correctly. Good drivers don't pay speeding fines because good drivers don't break the speed limit.

Quote from the BBC news report:
"Everyone should try living abroad for a while - I spent a year in Sweden as a student, and while that's hardly a "different" culture, it's great to gain a closer insight into how other people live" - Adrian Clark, London I think that is very relevant. The report says that most of those who leave are young single professionals. And they are only leaving for a short while. So to call this emmigration is misleading. These people don't give up their British passports or nationalities, and the vast majority return to live in the UK at some point. My point is that it is wrong to look at these figures when calculating net immigration into this country. The majority of people who immigrate to the UK intend to do so permanently. Those that emmigrate see it as a temporary period of their lives. Marcus |

Well, I for one am proud to be British and have no intention of emigrating anywhere. Okay, we get some things wrong (even some basic things) and we make some daft rules - but that notwithstanding we do an awful lot right!
I agree with peterinkendal, the UK provides excellent opportunities for those who wish to put in the effort - including our immigrant population, something that can't be said for many countries who are far less accommodating. Tobias - โทเบียส |

Nick never gets done for speeding because he goes everywhere on his high horse !
Sorry Nick could not resist the gag. Some people come, some people go, there has always been a movement of people around in the world. Each person has to decide what they want out of life. Sure there are some bad things about the UK but so are there bad things about Thailand. They are just different. Each to their own. |

It's certainly got a lot to do with the economy in the UK over the last 20 years, the housing boom especially has given people more money and spending power than any other generation before.
One of the very few beneficiaries of a rising house market is those that leave the market and that is exactly what we are seeing here. It is easy to see people now that were once Council house tenants, or street cleaners that bought their house for £20000 and it's now worth £300K (especially in London) and £300k is an awful lot of money. That sort of capital rise has given spending power that people like my grandparents or even parents could have only dreamed about when they were in their 30s/40s. |

Because I have only been involved with Thailand for a year - but I will. And when I do it will be because the opportunities that I have been able to take advantage of in this country will allow me to live in luxury in los. When I go there now I can afford to feed an entire village - why? Am I a better person than the villagers? of course not. Simply I was fortunate to be born in a race that allows everyone the opportunity to thrive.
have they? What chance does a rice picker in Thailand have to improve his lot?
Wrong! The country gave you the opportunity to buy property which you have developed and can sell at a profit on the back of a buoyant market. Are you seriously suggested that your opposite number in Thailand could do the same. I see from another thread that you are selling two properties for 125,000 each. Could you do that in LOS? don't be bloody silly of course not!
So the rice picker in Thailand should get off his arse and be successful - how insulting a remark is that?
It is if you bought a property for 20k 20 years ago.
All this proves is that this country takes road safety more seriously. Have you seen the fatality figures in LOS? And besides 200 thb is an awful lot of money to some people in other parts of the world. Peter |

You said it, Not me. Should the bloke who works nights as a security guard at my lock up, get up off his arse too. Just goe's to show that there are opportunities on both sides if you want them
Waiting until retirement age to retire to LOS isn't exactly thriving. If I were Thai, and me being me, I would look for opportunities in what ever field. And yes I have made an awfull lot of money in the property field, but that isn't my day job. My day job, I make an awfull lot of money too, enough to buy more property, and finance other things. And I am a simple man, as simple as they come.
What about the people who live on say Koh Samui who had the worse land possible, they only had beach, could not grow anything, their land wasn't worth a carrot 20 years ago, But now they have sold out and made big bucks, and probably invested in other things and have/are making a few bob. So yes my opposite number could/is/has.. do/done the same. The only reason why most here and in Thailand haven't got great deals of cash is the fact that most on either side of the world never had any to start with, just like I never, but I came up with a plan to make some, I started with a quid, and I know quite a few wealthy Thai's who started with nothing also.
Yes I have, and it isn't very pleasant, but it is not the speed that kills people in Thailand, more so the bad driving by motorbikes and the ekongs with no lights on. Our £60.00 fine is just another tax plain and simple. The housing boom that we have isn't worth much if you only have one house as most people do. You need at least two, otherwise you live in a false sense of security, thinking that you are doing ok, In reality for most, the housing boom is another way of getting into more debt, people think they are better off, but are they really? you suggest that we all want to go live in LOS? i lived out in LOS at the grand old age of 24 for a couple of years and yes it was fun but after awhile it became very normal. i can't speak for others but i enjoy it here in UK and especially in one of the greatest cities in the world...london. for me its not where i am living is important but its who i am living with. would LOS be so great if we didn't have our partners to keep us company? แอนโธนี่ |

problem is its not a fair race some get a head start while others are too slow and finish near the back and then look around for someone to blame because it certainly couldn't be their fault. so guess who they blame...Immigrants..why because their different looking...and they certainly don't blame the american and european immigrants who come and live here or the ones that work for the NHS and provide us with excellent health (free) care. แอนโธนี่ |
