when in thailand early november i purchased a new pick up a nissan something cant remember the name now , i got an email from the dealership telling me that i have to take it back for an oil change if its done a thousand km as part of the warranty , is this correct ? i have never bought a new car/pick up /van in the uk (as the kids around my home would cheerfully run a set of keys along it) i thought with it being new it would be a lot more kms before any work would be required on it or am a mistaken ? oh and apparently the work will cost between 1 to 3 thousand baht

First service for any new vehicle in LOS is usually at 1,000 K and then next at 5k and then at 10k, then every 10k after that.

And you had better stick to that regime, if not, the warranty becomes invalid.

If it is Nissan, Toyota or Isusu, the first service is usually free.

That will be either a Frontier, a Frontier Navara (bottom right) or a Wingroad.

We took our car in after 1k, 5k, 10k and 15k for free checks. The most we ever paid was a few baht for oil. The 20k service was around ฿1800. Next service is a full one at 40k which will be around ฿6500, a fraction of the price of the same thing in the UK. That's a Chevrolet though, I don't know what Nissan's policy is. 1 to 3 thousand baht sounds a hell of a lot for a simple 1000km check-up.

It's for Australia, but shouldn't be much different to Thailand.

According to the above, 1000km is a mere check-up plus a few nuts and bolts tightened up; no mention of fluid or filter changes until 5000km.

or 1000 baht a day rental will get you a good one and you don't meed to worry about costs apart from fuel, but you should make sure that you have an International Drivers Permit and their insurance covers you 100%.

That way you can keep the Bentley and follow on refueller Tank without worry.

The other day I could see a motorbike coming towards me, well. I had to assume it was a motorbike as it only had one light (having only one light doesn't always make it a bike tho') anyway, it was, but it looked rather odd.

When it got closer I could see why. The driver was hunched as far forward on the seat as he could get, the passenger was hunched as far back, between them, at 90 degrees to the bike with two wheels on the ground was........ another motorbike.

As you say Thad you never have the camera handy quick enough. A variation on the common sight of that wicker furniture piled high on the back of a pick-up, we were once somewhere near Phitsanolouk when we passed a pick-up being pulled over by the Highway Police. The 'leaning tower of Lay crisp boxes' rising about 20 feet at a jaunty angle obviously concerned him, but the thing that made me laugh for days was the sight of the passenger as we passed with 'just one more big box' on his lap squeezed against the windcreen and jamming his head back against the head restraint.

Back to the original topic, a word of warning on servicing in Thailand. I bought a new Isuzu pick-up in 2000 and it came with 'free' servicing for first year. The trouble was I caught them out by checking the oil filter after a service and it was still the old one. They made some excuse, but didn't try the same thing next time. That was a main dealer. Also not sure how good their mechanics are for anything other than basic servicing. When we were in England by brother in law 'borrowed' the pick-up and had a small prang. This caused some damage to the steering and despite the Isuzu dealership spending hours looking at it twice they did not fix it. In the end I stopped at a tyre depot and a guy who spoke great English diagnosed the problem in 2 minutes, and also told me where in Chiang Mai to go and get a secondhand steering part fixed at 1/3 the price of a new one. Now its perfect. Its like over here - there are good and bad motor traders, and that includes main dealers, so find one you trust and stick to them. Costs? - 1,000 to 2,000 baht depending on which service. I had a full service including new front brake cylinders for about 3,000. Bargain.
