Hello Spook

TGN is free to view. It is only one channel, transmitting 24 hours a day. It's a compilation of TV programmes from the various Thai terrestrial channels. Mainly news, soaps, quiz shows and documentaries.

There is one other Thai channel transmitted from Hotbird, Dhamma TV, a religious channel of limited interest to most.

Just a quick question on the above, so if anyone can share thier views it would be well appreciated....
Got a system lined up which can get hotbird, £200 all in..
I understand thier will only be 2 channels....and one of them is a religous one so my question would be to the guys who already have this is that do you think it is really worth it...
My missus already wathches thai tv on highspeedworld on the pc so not sure if it would be worth it...
Any views would be appreciated...thanks ian

I know with the system we are after there will be shed loads of extra channels but we only want the thai as i dont watch tv (no time)......cheers

You want to shop around if you've been told £200. It cost me around £80 to get installed. Hotbird just requires a second satelite dish ( normally the older & bigger dishes that first came out as opposed to the digital dishes ) & a "switch" which will swap over from which ever dish you are gonna use & is attached to your sat box. The installer supplied the dish, switch & cables, set it up all for £80. I just got a local bloke out the small adds in the local rag. As you are probably aware...no extra payment is needed for TGN, who's tv listings can be found on the net.

I would imagine Ian's £200 included a digital receiver, a must if you don't already have Sky and a reasonable option even if you do. With a separate receiver you can watch Sky on one TV and TGN on another and there's no need for a switch. Your £80 option with a switch I guess means you use your Sky box to receive TGN and can watch one or the other, but not both at the same time.

Two receivers keep the peace in our house. Bee goes upstairs watching Thai News or playing the near impossible game of "find a program that Mum Jokmok doesn't star in", Matthew and I stay downstairs to soak up some quality Teletubbies or Tikkabilla on cBeebies Nod

Yes you are right Maokaang, the £200 is for 85cm dish, cable, dish motor(movable), patched technomate1500cl reciever, patching cable and wall mount....the reciever will unlock loads of satalites due to the patching...but i was just curious if the thai tv was worth getting?..

From our point of view, overall, possibly not. Bee's not really into Thai soaps that much and spends more time watching CSI Miami/Las Vegas/New York than Thai TV. Having said that, the news programmes do get watched regularly, with some occasional light relief from a quiz show or two. On the other hand, I've been to some households where TGN seems to be switched on permanently.

I think it very much depends on the tastes of the person who's going to be watching it.

Sorry mate, I'll put some reggae tunes on for you next time Banana or maybe my communist party manifesto video Sleep

Seriously, my wife watches Thai TV all the time and would be totally lost and in a state of panic should she not be able to view it.

Whenever we get poor reception .... my life is hell Argue

Listings for TGN can be found here

If that's the case, don't bother with a motorized dish. Just a bog standard FTA. receiver with a 80cm dish should be all you need.

Yes...that £80 was only for the dish, switch, cables & installation. I use my digital sky box to recieve both. Couldn't fit another electronic component under the tv if I tried...no room! As for watching it...we leave it on as background noise alot so that our daughter is used to hearing Thai & it helps her pick the language up.

I hooked up a 80cm dish and separate box and can get every channel except Thai TV5. It just comes up with a blank screen with no message.

Any help welcome. Should I get the LNB changed??
