I tried phoning Thaiboi yesterday but got music down the line where I'd usually hear a ringing tone. I redialled about twelve times times, but kept hearing the same song by Maroon 5. We've had issues with crossed lines in the past, so I waited about ten minutes before trying again: The same damn song! So I let it play for about 20 seconds and then he answered...."did you hear music?" Yes! Turns out it was supposed to be there!
The latest Thaksin-tastic mobile phone feature is to have your boring and old-fashioned "beeeeeeeeeep" replaced by a chart-topping pop song for 15 bahts. Don't get caught out like I did, though.
Cliff, mervyn, Jack - do you know when the 'charging' of the call begins when this service is used? Is it when the call is answered by the human or when the music begins to play?

Hi Tobias The charge starts once the human or answer phone kicks in, in LOS. The ring tone is simply replaced by music, some netwoeks do it without asking and then after three months when you forget about it charge 30 bhat per month. To get rid of the music is the devils own job trying to explain to a operator I just dont want the music I want a normal ring tone, they do the same sort of thing with voice mail if you dont watch out, Nid gave them some verbal in the end, in Thai that did the trick.
You're about 2 years behind the times mate - been happening for ages . I did exactly the same when the wife first put a musical ringtone on her phone - thought I'd got a wrong number.
What advise can you give me in using a phone in Thailand I used a T-Mobile last year and got rinsed...i am planning a pays as you go then get a sim card out there.. I know T mobile works what about Orange- O2 Vodaphone 3
Those roaming charges can really mount up. The network you buy a phone on here means nothing as you are going to use a local Thai SIM. Problem is that if you buy a PAYG phone, chances are, it will be locked to the network you bought it on and will reject a Thai SIM. Three options, get it "unlocked" in Thailand but make sure you get a phone that is known out there. Get it done here before you go or have a bash yourself with one of the many free or cheap programs available. In my opinion avoid the third option, the networks are getting wise to this and the locks are more sophisticated on many new models, you could end up with a dead phone.

Jack is more in the phone scene than me but my mate who lives in thai has a Nokia and switches chips wherever he is.
I got stung by T Mobile which switches to AIS in thai (sometimes orange) so my solution was have UK phone and buy a cheapie out there with english programme (man in Big C pattaya can do)
By the way i don't get westlife but a thai song on calling g/f! (lucky me she likes blue!!) colin244

Joe under no circumstances use a UK sim card you will be charged one hell of a lot even for recieving a call (local & international) and making local calls. The best option is to go to a phone store to buy a new local sim card (about three quid)let the store fit the card to check it works (many times you have no need to unlock the phone further than it is already unlocked, and if it does need more unlocking the store will do it for you)send all people who need your Thai number an SMS message so that when they phone you they are paying for the international call (as cheap as one penney a minute)and you have no charge then for recieving calls. If you want to make a call international remember to put the 007, 008 or 009 before the country code (eg. 00744********)and you are charged about 10 pence per minute, local calls range from 5bhat to 1/4bhat per minute depends on what deal you subscribe to in Thailand (but thats another story)
If you have not got already then get a pay as you go sim free phone.....but not from the uk.
On arrival in Bangkok go to floor 4 in the MBK shopping mall, you will be there for hours trying to decide which phone you want and apart from the phones that are locked to DTAC or HUTCH everything else is sim free.
For Example: i bought a sharp 802sh from there brand new, all singing and dancing type phone, i used 1 2 call sim card, but make sure you get the right plan from the shop such as FREEDOM PLUS or SAWASDEE vthe phone cost me 9,000baht the sim card 300baht. Although the phone has vodafone stamped on it from Japan upon arrival here i bouhght a vodafone sim card and enjoy all the same benefits as if i had got the phone here, difference is though my phone is not available in the uk and its nearest rival which is also a Sharp, handset only is £600 from vodafone!!
Did enjoy the sales girls face when she found out about my phone!!
I used to be indecisive.....but now i'm not so sure!!!
