ok I,m prepared to admit I might have missed on technology somewhere. BUT as dvd recorders seem to be getting incredibly cheap, i,m wondering if its worth getting one, but then we find out that there are region 2 only. Is it possible to unlock these bits of kit and if so how.

Yes, some you can. First of all try to decide which recorder you want then search for an unlocking sequence on the internet before buying it.

The way I did it was using amazon.co.uk. You can get some helpful reviews on recorders there also,

Print off the sequence and then go and buy your recorder.

Another way is to use a program like dvd shrink which is free to backup the disks and remove the region protection. That way you only need a region free player or if your PC has space 2 dvd drives one on region 1 and the other on region 2.

If you use this software you only need one DVD drive in your PC. It gets in there and allows you to play all regions on your PC. Even works if you have used up all the 5 chances you get to swap the region on the DVD drive.

It has a 30 day free trial option. Very good bit of software.

NOTE: DVD-RAM, Matshi.ta XX-8xxx, SW-9xxx series DVD drives, and Torisan DRD-Uxxx series DVD drives are not supported now, and there is no plan to support them.

Sods law is that I have a Mat****a drive on my laptop but it works on the desktop okay.

There is a free programme too that does the same job DVD43 - do a Google or look here. Obviously this is only of use for computer DVD players/recorders.
