We're really looking forward to moving to our new home on January 2nd. The landlord is okay about us having a satellite dish on the property, so I've been "window shopping" for a satellite system. I'm quite a novice when it comes to satellite equipment, so all comments are welcome!

Firstly, the receiver we're going for is the Technomate 1500CI+ Super which is reviewed here. It looks like one of the best out there.

The Thai channels are on Hotbird 13°E, however using the same 80cm dish and a multi-LNB bracket, we can add a few more LNBs, so we're going to do just that! We're going to have three LNBs pointing at the following satellites (click each link for full channel list):

Astra 2 28°E
Astra 1 19°E
Hotbird 13°E

Satellite dish with multi-LNB kit. Why watch one satellite when you can watch three!

If you've had a satellite system installed recently and can recommend a reliable installer who will set everything up for a reasonable price, please let me know. Thanks.

Hi Cliff
When I installed our satelight I was just as enthusiastic as what you sound right now , until I found out that there is only one channel for Ying to watch ( TGN )as the other one is not up to much. Also , because of the time difference , the shows that they would normally watch on TGN are normally finished , unless they were normally up quite late.
There is one movie ( series ) that Ying watches on satelight , and all the rest are on her laptop , so I sometimes wonder if the effort was worth it.

Cheers Thumbs Up

Colin - we're moving from a flat on the top of a hill to a place at the bottom of a different, lower hill. The terrestrial television and radio signals from London beam straight into our old flat, bringing regional programmes from both the capital and the Thames Valley. Our new place can only receive the latter, so the satellite dish will greatly improve the choice available to us. In fact, we'll even be able to get the BBC channels from Northern Ireland, Sky News Ireland and Ulster television all for free on Astra 2 28°E. Al Jazeera's new English language television station is now up and running on Hotbird 13°E. (I'd love to see how they're reporting Saddam's hanging!) BBC World often offers more compehensive coverage than News 24. It's all about increased choice and having the option of watching certain channels during important world events (e.g. CNN for the American Presidential elections). I think we've just about taken care of the news coverage!

What about the other channels? Do you watch any of those? Music? Movies? Channels from France? Les observez-vous ? Je parle français couramment et regarderai la télévision française toute l'heure ! Germany? Mein Deutsch ist nicht gut, aber möglicherweise kann ich die Sprache erlernen! The Netherlands? Deze vertaalwebsite is zo veel pret! Italy? Non ho idea di che cosa sto parlando! China? Okay, you get the picture.

Cliff,
Apart from the dish (and presumably some sort of control box, do you have to pay any sort of subscription or buy cards?

John, all of the channels I've mentioned are free-to-air, so no subscription is necessary. That said, there are subscription packages available. An annual subscription to CanalSat (French equivelant of Sky) costs between £285 for these five channels to £745 Eeker for a CanalSat All-in-One card. I understand all films on CanalSat are broadcast with an option of both French and English soundtracks.

Here's one that a lot of people go for: ART Arabesque Sport. They show all the Premiership football matches with English commentary for £95 a year. How much does Sky charge for the same matches?

What about this one? It's got a couple of good reviews and is specifically recommended as being the most ideal receiver for the ART Sports package.
