I am considering buying a new flat screen plasma/lcd type TV in the near future. Within the next 2/3 years I hope to move permanently to LOS.
Can anyboby tell me if the newest range of these TV's are compatible with Thai systems or can easily adapted for use in Thailand. |

Just two things that you need to know, Thai TV's use the NTSC screen definiton system where we use PAL however almost all new TV's these days come with NTSC compatibility. Also Thailand do not use the SCART connection this is a Euro only style of connection they do however use the component style (Red, Green, Blue) connectors so as long as your TV is fitted with such inputs it should be fine.

Re The Dentist: Are you sure about Thai TV using NTSC?
I remember looking at it a couple of years back when I was looking at bringing my TV etc back. I always thought it was PAL and my checks on the internet seem to back this theory up. No expert though as there's a lot of rubbish on the net! |

I thought it was PAL too but do agree with the phone plug comments in lieu of SCART.

I'm sorry, but that's absolutely wrong. Thailand uses PAL B/G with the sound carried at 5.5Mhz above the video signal, the UK uses PAL I with the sound at 6.0Mhz above. Check the specifications of the TV that you are buying that it can work with PAL B/G, otherwise you'll get no sound. Many - but not all - TVs sold in Europe support all PAL formats, but check first to be sure. The above only matters for receiving terrestrial or cable TV via the tuner. Direct input (e.g. SCART) from a DVD player, video player or satellite box will not be affected by this. A technical explanation of PAL formats can be found here: What are the PAL-B, G, H, I & D Variations Almost correct, Thailand doesn't have SCART connections, so you will need to buy a SCART adapter or two to connect with equipment bought in Thailand. These are 3 pin RCA phono, colour coded yellow for video, red and white for audio left and right. You can either buy an adapter, or a replacement cable, not unlike the following:
I bought these in the UK before leaving for Thailand. I'm sure you can get them in Thailand but they're not commonplace. Regards Paul พอล เข้าเมืองตาหลิ่วต้องหลิ่วตาตาม |

Sorry, no, just a sad pathetic ex-pat who's had to learn what the score is. Having said that, any TV repairs required, only 50 baht per hour Paul พอล เข้าเมืองตาหลิ่วต้องหลิ่วตาตาม |

floor four MBK has many shops selling scart sockets and adaptors as shown, the tv shop at the entrance of MBK sell
full multi channel tvs unlike the fixed models sold generally in thailand, the multi channels are imported rather then thai made. sean |

just to put your mind at rest iam in the tv business .thailand uses PAL B sytem we use PAL I the difference is the sound frequency as stated in one of the replies and it will only not work if your want thai tv via terrestial broadcast. also to point out that of all the major brand names ,the only ones that do not have dual or multi band tuners are SONY and PANASONIC products . SAMSUNG PHILIPS TOSHIBA JVC LG PIONEER all have multi band tuners

Skippy,
Your TV will work in Australia however due to the different sync pulses utilised in Australia the picture will be displayed upside down. The audio should be fine except due to the modulation technique used in Australia you will often notice interference such as the phrase "good day" appearing as "g'day" also the words "strewth" and "crikey" often appear for no reason at all. I bought a couple recently. There's so many for sale that you will normally find one locally. Used one for the son's playstation and another in a spare bedroom. Bid for ones with stands, a cheap stand can cost more than the telly.
