I shall be purchasing a lap top from somewhere in los at some point very soon. After this i shall be staying at a hotel that states it has internet access in the rooms, so my question is this, how do i get to use it? is it a simple case of plug in the modem and log on or what?

Anybody with experience ofdoing this your help would be appreciated.

I used to be indecisive.....but now i'm not so sure!!!

Mark,

as the hotel if they have 'wired' or 'wireless' internet. If it's the former, then buy a patch lead when you're purchasing your laptop (they'll be less than 100 THB.)

Wired
Assuming they don't charge you for internet access in the hotel, it's just a case of plugging the network cable into the point (usually on the floor near the desk or sometimes on the back of the phone), and Robert's your father brother.
If they charge you, you'll be prompted with a login banner when you open your web browser (probably Internet explorer). Just follow the instructions on screen. (If it mentiones a voucher code, they might be selling them at hotel reception)

Wireless
If the access is wireless, the your laptop will require a wireless network adaptor (~90% of new laptops have them). Best ask at reception how to connect as it varies from place to place.

With both wired and wireless options, there is likely to be instructions in the room.

with my lap top i just plug in the cable attached to a modem or wall socket and double click on the internet icon.

you may need to purchase a broadband cable but they are very cheap

I've bought two IBM Thinkpads from Global Solutions and service has always been good. They have a couple of shops on the north side (i.e. on the right as you walk in.) IIRC, one shop on on 3rd Fl and one on 4th Fl). They also do Compaq, Acer, Tosh, etc...

It's usually every 10 seconds for me. Perhaps it's the way I look! LOL
BTW...the best thing to say is 'Mee Laew' to which they usually chuckle and leave you alone.

I've never found Thailand cheap for computers. I suggest a little holiday in Singapore, and visit the Funan Centre
