Do any members know if a UK house phone will work in LOS or can it be adapted?
The only problem I can see is the connection lead which can be replaced. Most of the phones I've seen for sale in Big C and Tesco Lotus in LOS are pretty naff looking so I was going to take over a better designed BT model. The phone is has a sticker on it "made in Thailand" ! |

It will definitely work if you use an extremely long cable.

If the lead connecting to the phone line has a plug going into the phone rather than being hard wired, then it's simply a case of replacing the lead.
The phone will work fine, but features such as Caller ID may not work if the phone is only programmed for UK use. Paul พอล เข้าเมืองตาหลิ่วต้องหลิ่วตาตาม |

Funny enough I thought the same. The phones on sale in Thailand are plasticy, cheap crap! Good idea, I will probably take one over too. |

I think the telephone connection used in the UK is RJ11, and that used in Thailand is RJ45? Given that RJ45 is commonly used on modem cards it is extremely easy to buy RJ11/RJ45 converters in the UK. Any computer fair or shop will tend to stock. John |

The plug used in Thailand is RJ11. So you will need a RJ11 / RJ11 line cord.
RJ11 is smaller than the BT plug - its the one used on computers. RJ-11 plug I think RJ45 is the plug used for office data networking. To Infinity and Beyond ! |

Ha,ha,ha - 4 out of 7 useful replies I suppose is not too bad but why the silly, puerile remark?
Thanks for the useful replies but it seems changing the line cord may not be a solution.Apparently UK phones use different parts of the multi-cable in the line cord so some re-wiring may be necessary. (Helpful information from anther forum!!) |

Don't let that put you off. Thais are masters at repair and improvision. You are sure to find some one who can rewire it for you for 150 baht. |

Well, I don't know the technicalities quoted to you on another forum, I only know the reality. Two of the phones I have in our house in Thailand were purchased in the UK. All I did was change the lead and they work fine. One is a Philips Zenia Voice 200 DECT Digital which says on the box "Product to use only in the U.K." That doesn't mean all equipment will work, but the two I have tried certainly do. If that is the case, then perhaps simply changing the cord solves the problem. If the RJ11 socket in the phone is wired universally, replacing the cord is all the re-wiring required. It seems to have worked for me. Paul พอล เข้าเมืองตาหลิ่วต้องหลิ่วตาตาม |

Which one, hahaha? Seriously though, a sense of humour is optional. |
