Hi,
We've got my mother in law coming over to the uk for a holiday next week. As far as I'm aware, she'll not be entitled to nhs treatment if she is sick whilst being here ? I was wandering if anyone knows how to arrange travel insurance her or knows of any good companies in thailand that we could use.
thanks

Bupa/Blue Cross would probably be the best bet, but if she lives out in the sticks she'd probably have to have access to a fax machine to get the paperwork done in time for next week. accessBUPA/BlueCross

Saying that I believe the NHS is pretty lax when it comes to actually charging foreigners for medical treatment... things may have changed though.

The down side of blue cross is that the benefits are a joke, if she had a serious need for long intensive treatment then the maximum payout would not last very long,
If we were in the US getting medical expenses insurance at a reasonable rate would not be a problem and the costs don,t bear thinking about. Strangely the travel agents don,t seem to be interested in selling insurance or indeed thai airways, a missed opportunity maybe.

Marc,
I used worldnomads.com(an aussie insurance firm)to insure my girlfriend(now wife)when she visited for 5 mths last year.
Easily done over the internet;I think I paid about £200 pounds for 6mths coverage.
Never claimed so I couldn,t say about their payouts etc Shrug

My girlfriend who is here now took out bupa. 60 days for around 2600 baht. You probably could get better but time was pressing so we took that all.

Seems all ok.

Get medical insurance (Bupa is one of the best)

I'm saying that so that the next paragraph is not taken as gospel for every case.

When On came to England in 2004 she spent a day getting some emergency medical treatment (and was supplied with a large amount of medication) During the entire time I always refereed to her as 'my Wife' (albeit we had only done the village thing at that time) we weren't charged for anything, not a sausage..... a very close friend told me on the mobile "if they don't bring it up, keep your gob shut"

But, as the first line ..... get some insurance.

P.S. a couple of the chaps here use WorldNomads.... no problems on the payout side of things.

If you require marijuana..... press the hash key.
