I have not found anything that stops you getting bitten by the little sods, but if you can get hold of something called 'boon' it certianly stops the itchin. It's a white chalky paste that the Thais use on mozzy bites on babies, cost about 1 bht and comes in a small plastic bag (looked a bit sus to me when the wife gave it to me )but it works

Hi Andy,

Most mosquitoes (apparently) only feed around dawn and sunset, I can vouch for the sunset bit (and a few hours after) - but I don't think I've ever seen a dawn in Thailand so can't comment ....

There are 2 products called 'sketolene' which both carrefour & tesco-lotus sell - a yellow labelled pump action spray with 20% DEET in it, which works well for me, and a green labelled roll on repellent - I can't tell what's in that, 'cos the label is in Thai. You can also buy an aerosol repellant called 'OFF' in thailand, which also contains DEET (I think you can buy this in the UK as well).

Anything with DEET in it should work, the more the better up to about 30%.

Hope this is of some help

Mike

Marmite, have it on some toast every morning and they don't bite. It's something to do with the vitamin B12 apparently.

It's 50/50. The mozzies either love it or hate it. Wink

Also, they hate bright light which is why they're only around at twilight time. When we had some unwanted mozzies in our living room a couple of months ago, we just turned on the main lights and they hid in the dark corners. We have full-spectrum lights so it was like the midday sun to them.

There is another clear lotion mosquito and insect repellent called TACT, spray or lotion, from Japan obtainable at all leading drug stores in Thailand.

I have always suffered from being a mossie magnet so I use the Jungle Strength mossie repelant available from Boots but you must remember to apply every four hours around the ankles / legs as that is the main place they go for (whilst sitting at a bar drinking the bar dry they are under the table drinking you dry !!)

Mosquitos also bite during the day-the stripey ones that carry dengue fever/haemorhaggic fever. They are present in Pattaya.

The best advice is don't get bitten-wear long sleeve shirts/trousers. Impregnate the collars/cuffs/hems with DEET based killer and you'll be OK.

That said,I get adversly affected and don't follow that advice.

The worst times in Pattaya are at dusk. Mosquitos and others biteys tend to accumulate under tables, especially outdoors. The outdoor bog can also be a breeding ground for them.

I used jungle strength 50% DEET on my first visit-they bloody loved it and would come back for a second/third sitting and I had lumps on my legs like tennis balls.
I then tried a thai herbal remedy which contains citronella. It's in a spray and works for me. MikeNea's advice is also good.

Nowadays if I'm sitting outside at night I light a coil or two beneath the table (stick it in an empty bottle),sit under a fan and use the citronella spray. Not had an adverse reaction or plagues of bites since.
Plus I smell fragrant and lemony LOL

Andy,

bit of a curve ball this one, but a mate of mine swears by "Avon Woodland Fresh Body Oil". This is part of a range of moisturiser products by Avon, but I understand that only the Woodland Fresh variety works. My mate is a surgeon who does a lot of travelling (not just LOS) and swears by the stuff. He also claims that it is used by the British Army as opposed to Deet! Although I'm not 100% convinced that our army are covering themselves in what is effectively ladies moisturising cream! Still, you never know!

A bunch of us went over to LOS in Jan this year. One of the girls works for a distributor and got us a job lot of the stuff. We all used it and I have to say that it worked well. Certainly stopped the mozzies.. Although, as we were spending most nights drinking on the beaches of Ko Samet, I still suffered at the hands of the sand flies and other biting mites - seems the Avon stuff doesn't work so well for them.

Could be worth a try!

Rob.

I normally have the same problem. I am sure that they travel for miles just to get me !
I am using something new this time bought in Thailand for me by somebody that runs the bar I frequent.
It is made by Soffell and is Mosquito repellent lotion - Floral frangrance !! It is a a plastic bottle abount 9cm tall.
It seems to attract the Lady Boys, but it keeps the mozzies away Smiler
As an aside, before I found this one that worked a Expat told me to use Iodine solution on the bites. Normally each strick causes a red welt about 2 cm across that last 5-8 days !
Using Iodine reduced the red area to about .5 cm and the strikes were gone in 2-3 days.
Good luck !

must be different types of mozz as I used jungle formula with deet in LOS & Gambia where on a boat trip for a full day out nothing until the army truck safari part of the trip crashing through the trees caused Thai type ants to scoff everyone on board while the driver appeared to think we were saying go faster Eeker

I must agree with Ian on this one. Afloral bouquet cream made by Soffel works wonders for me. I am a mosquito magnet. Maybe something to do with my diabetes. Sweet Blood? But that Soffel cream is a miracle worker. And it is quite a pleasant aroma. Dave

I always try to eat some raw baby garlic cloves, about 3 cloves twice a week for a fortnight before you go to thailand and once a week while you are there. Was told this by a Swiss guy i know who has lived there for 26 years, he used to have a restaurant in Pattaya before moving upto Uttaradit. Works wonders and the mozzies seem to leave me alone.

I always leave my black lined suitcase slightly propped open in a hotel room and then on my return zip it closed quickly, its always full of mozzies because they like the dark. Next day I release them in sunlight and watch them squirm. Another trick is to sleep with a fan on blowing right across the bed, they hate air currents and stay clear. Finally, cover right up and religeously use spray. Finally get a bat and hunt the ******s down. They especially love mosquito netting and curtains and blinds. Hanging a dark towel in the bathroom gives them somewhere to hide and then you can sweep the electric bat down the towel and annihilate them.

I'm guessing that keeps more than mosquitoes away Smiler

Dengue fever is specifically transmitted by the day mosquito, which is present in all areas including urban areas. There has been a big rise in Dengue fever cases this year so important to take care in the day too.

we bought an insectocuter and it worked great until our friendly lazy gheckos decided to make it his home (easy pickings) one night we heard this almighty bang and an awful smell. the gecko was fried. i unstuck him with a lollystick and thought i'd leave clearing him out to the morning. next morning mother in law comes into the house (i'm asleep still), sees the insectocuter and sticks in here hand to get gecko out while it was stil on Blush, another bang and mum was on the floor with everyone laughing. missus decided that it was dangerous and threw it away Frowner.
