Noi has been off work sick since last Tuesday, and was taken into hospital on Thursday night with a serious kidney infection. She is being treated with intravenous antibiotics and is slowly on the mend, but it looks like she will be in there for a few more days at least.

I'm self-employed, and haven't had any experience of statutory sick pay etc, so any advice on claiming this would be very welcome. For example, does she complete a self certificate for the first week and then get a certificate from the hospital?

Many thanks.

Hi Nick

Sorry to hear about Noi, hope she has a speedy recovery.
As to sick pay, best phone her employer and see what they require, it's them that will administer it.

I don,t know Noi,s job;but if she is classed as Staff she should get her full pay(depends on how long she has worked there)
If not..SSP was about 55 pounds per week if I remember correctly Shrug

Even if that is the case then the employer will want to ensure that they can get as much back from the Government in partially recompense. So still expect sick certificate to be needed.

hi nick
glad to read the other half is on the road to recovery
i didn't think all companies were in the same league regards sickness schemes for instance i am paye with my company and can self certify any sickness for the first 6 days the seventh and and the need for more time off must be accompanied by a certificate but i am paid full salary from the first day

Thanks for the good wishes, everyone.

Galahad, unfortunately she's hourly paid, and I suspect that Primark will only pay the minimum they can get away with. Bah!.

When she leaves hospital, the hospital can give a certificate showing length of stay etc. After that it is down to your GP.

Kind Regards

Make sure you keep copies of the sickness certs and they cover from day 1, always make copies and send the originals to the employer, invariably you will be told that they should be sent differently, but it is easier to get from the employer and send to the DSS than it is to get from the DSS and send to the employer. Get them from day 1 until returned to work and you should not have any problems. From my experience, no-one seems to know the correct procedure and it is on;y the "claimant" that loses out, it is at this stage that the copies may prove to be invaluable. Also seek some advice from the C.A.B. There are strict deadlines on claiming, but IMHO few on dishing out.
