I am visiting LOS again soon and need some travel insurance. Based upon my trawl of the net and reviews elsewhere it seems at most all you get for your money is a piece of paper explaining why you wont get anything if you claim.
As Im taking my son this time I need good insurance but dont know who to use. Does anyone have experience of claims via UK companies whilst travelling in Thailand ?.
Changed insurers to them after a forum member's experience when making a claim from them. It was a claim that was open to challenge and not insignificant, but was paid promptly and without hassle.

I did use Columbus Travel Insurance ( yearly family policy ) & had for 3 years but then they refused to insure me for cardiac issues when I had a blood clot on the heart last year. As a NatWest Gold customer I get free travel insurance with them & they did cover me for this issue last year. However, they have had a change in their policy 'wording' earlier this year & have now imformed me I'm no longer insured for cardiac issues. It was a blood clot...my heart is as strong as an ox but it was cardiac related ( near or on the heart ) so...I'm stuck. Remember...any pre-existing conditions 'probably' wont be covered unless you have a specialist insurance for that particular issue. I would imagine your GP notes are checked before any pay out. Check your policy.

I now have "free" insurance via my bank, but before that I always used Trailfinders. You don't have to book with them to get this. A good few years ago I had a reason to claim from them and they (or the Co. behind them) were excellent.
But I guess someone else has a different experience?

I booked my ticket with Trailfinders but declined the insurance on the basis of cost vs cover.
Maybe I'll check it again.
I get discounted insurance via TPS through my company and although Ive used them loads all I get in the post is a sheet of paper ..!
I wonder what would happen in the event of a claim. Also many of the policies I looked at specify they wont pay unless they agree the situation..so if you consider you get hit by a truck in Bangkok, break both legs and shatter your pelvis whilst knocked out..get carted off by the bodysnatchers to a hospital someplace..only to find they wont pay.
My incident was a bit more straightforward than that, broke an ankle fighting off a croc in Oz!
Oh, okay, slipped on a wet floor and flew down a few steps only to be halted by my sisters washing machine!!
Messed up my ankle though, and needed operating on or permanent damage. Tough choice, fly back to the UK, present yourself at a local hosp and get seen by whoever is on duty, or operated on by a leading orthaopedic(?) surgeon who performed the task for the Penrith Panthers RL club.
No quibbles from the insurance even after I said all bills had been paid and one arrived after I got home.
I still have the metal plate and screws that were used to pin all together again.

I also have an annual multitrip policy with Insure and Go, they also cover over 30 days (I believe up to 90 days but not sure exactly) on any single trip, we are on their annual family silver policy for the two of us for £80 pounds. I think the policy is underwritten by AIG.
For probably the 1st time ever I studied the small print and found that with a lot of cheaper travel policies some have very specific listed activities that you would not be covered for if you had an accident undertaking them but with Insure and Go you most certainly are fully covered for just about everything a good trip would normally include.
I have used Insure & Go these last few years. Up front, nothing hidden, competative price. Claimed only once on lost/stolen items including travel cheques. Immediate response, still waiting on American Express to pick up the phone!!!
Be very carefull & read the small print of your travel insurance. I took out annual holiday insurance with Insure & go a few years ago. After reading the small print it looked as though I wouldn't be covered for "private" medical treatment. I called Insure & Go & was told that if treatment was required when in Thailand I should go to the nearest "Government hospital". Treatment at hospitals like Bangkok Pattaya, Pattaya International & similar would not be covered. I cancelled the policy & took out another which would cover treatment at a decent hospital. I don't know if this is still the case with Insure & Go. There have been quite a few reports of people not being treated at hospitals due to this "clause".
Thats really why Im concerned. If it was just me then it wouldnt really be an issue but my son is only 7..8 when we return and decent cover is required.
