Hello/Sawatdee ka to everyone on this forum,

My name is Jenny and this is my first posting on the forum...I will be running the London Marathon on 23rd April 2006 and have decided to run in aid of the Pattaya Orphanage Trust

Having many family members (my mother Thai) and friends over in Thailand, I have visited the country many times.
I have chosen to run in aid of the charity as I think it is a fantastic, and much needed, opportunity for children who would otherwise have no chance of living a "normal life" e.g. education, relative stability in their home life.

If you would like to make a pledge/donation or simply find out more about the orphanage, please click on the link below where I have created a charity web page and written more about the trust.
http://www.justgiving.com/jennykelly

Thank you for taking the time to read this,
Jenny

Well done Jenny. Banana

May I add that The Pattaya Orphanage via the Father Ray umbrella organazition also sends funds to the orphans with HIV at the Camillian Center

Jenny,

You are a wonderful person.

An inspiration.

I'm pretty skint so I can only donate a little, but here's what I will do...

...I recently entered the Hatfield Marathon (on May 14th). I was going to run it for a Big charity, but they haven't got back to me, and - given my links to Thailand and your wonderful example - I'll do it for the Pattaya Orphanage Trust too.

Here's my web page...

http://www.justgiving.com/Marcusrun

Hope you don't mind!

Marcus

Wow, the response has been fantastic so far and it's only been one day!

A big thank you to everyone who has sponsored me so far- thanks Lee & Tar for featuring this thread and sending the message on to all the other Thailand-UK members.

Marcus- I don't mind at all if you run for the orphanage, in fact, it's great as it all helps to raise awareness of it and obviously get some pennies rolling in!

Hi Grahame- thanks a lot for agreeing to sponsor me- you can do it at http://www.justgiving.com/jennykelly . I'm not too sure yet how to PM (only post no.2 on here!), if there is a problem re donating let me know.

Thanks again everyone, Jenny

Hi Jenny

To send a PM to Grahame is quite easy.
Left click on his name and then from the box that appears select Invite Grahame to a private topic.

Cheers

Thank you so much for not minding. I felt really bad in case I was stealing your thunder, but so inspired and enthused by your idea that I just had to do my run for the same charity. Thank you so much.

Lee
Thank you for your support and for keeping this thread top of the list. I know you've done so much for Thailand and for the Thai-UK community already (through charity and through this website) and I feel proud to be having your help now as I try to do my little bit. Thank you.

Grahame
A PM will soon be winging its way through cyberspace to you. Thank you.

Phillipp
You are a good and generous person. To donate some overtime pay through me and Jenny to this orphanage is simply staggeringly wonderful. Thank you so much.

Rich & Orasa
You are lovely. Thank you so much for the donation. Getting that first donation in is wonderful; you've set the ball rolling and no mistake. Thank you so much.

Thank you to everyone who has and is going to donate. This thing is taking on a life of its own. Suddenly I'm in contact with mates I've not heard from for years and the language school where I work is even discussing how best to support the marathon!

We'll put some smiles on some little Thai faces yet!

Thumbs Up

Jenny & Marcus, Applause

Mam & I have just happily donated to your excellent cause rather than move from the sofa & run ourselves! LOL

Seriously though, what a fantastic idea, I'm SURE many other forum members will do the same! Nod

All the best with getting more sponsors, err well, & running it of course! LOLThumbs Up

Marcus, perhaps you could start a thread in the lounge and detail the ups and downs of training for such an event (if you're not to busy actually running Smiler)- it may help to inspire others in the future.

Wow! What a great idea!

Mind you, I'm suddenly busier than I've ever been before!

Not only is there work, and now running, I've also emailed more or less every contact in my address book to raise interest in this marathon. Suddenly I'm getting emails from old mates from years ago! I can hardly get away from the computer!

Add to that my Saturday job, my blog, all the books I have to read and the school's social programme and I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed! But in a good way...

Maybe this thread is a good idea! Give me a day or two! Thumbs Up

Is Neil Kloot a good friend then?
(from the donation page)
Do I have to pay up if you die in the middle of the run?

Seriously - good to see your blogg up and running again.

Lee,

I noticed that too; do you think he's hoping? Eeker

Rich,

Good point! Two weeks into training and I feel like I've got a broken foot, and I'm developing a stinking cold! I thought this was meant to be healthy!

I must confess, I did do a marathon once before - about 18 years ago! I celebrated by spending the next ten or twelve years smoking roll-ups!

Seriously mate, point taken. I want to complete this thing. So tomorrow I'll ease off a bit and instead of running take a really long walk and up the pressure again more gradually.

Jenny
Not only are you running, not only did you start this thread, not only did you inspire me to do my run for the orphanage, but you've donated on my page too. You are wonderful. Thank you so much mate.

If others would like to support me and/or Jenny and donate to the orphanage, these are the websites:

Thank you!

I posted on Ajarn.com (the website for English teachers in Thailand) and have had three replies so far:

quote:
how does one become so earnest?

quote:
Doesn't seem like any of these low lifes want to help - probably too busy spending it on whores in Pattaya than street kids.
Why not ask some THAI people to help out?

quote:
If you were a Thai would you think it fine to ask Thai people to help the homeless Big Issue sellers in London?

Here: http://ajarnforum.net/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=11628

I don't quite know what to make of that!
But, early days yet.
Thank you to all the people on THIS site for your great support!

Hello,

I've stickied your message to the top of the forum in which you posted. Unless it's something fairly lightweight, folks tend to ignore threads in that area and it gets shunted down to the bottom fairly quickly.

The person you quoted is NOT representitive of our forum (I hope!), and Ajarn Forum wishes Marcus the very best of luck with his run.

Thank you Louis,

Thank you so much for stickying my thread. That's really really good of you and certainly does provide a huge counterweight to the rather negative response I first received. Thank you.

I feel a bit bad now about what I wrote here in this thread in my last posting. I certainly didn't mean to disparage Ajarn.com in any way and deeply apologise if it came across as such. When I lived in Bangkok Ajarn.com was a real life-line to me and I have very fond memories indeed of reading through and learning from its articles and discussions.

In fact, I always make of point of directing people I know who wish to live in Thailand towards your site. It's a really wonderful resource and I can't thank you enough for it.

And thank you again for highlighting my fund-raising effort. It is very kind of you and your site. Thank you.

Casey Jones,

Nice one mate! Thank you, and your family, for such a lovely pledge. It really is very very kind of you.

And it certainly provides me with more of a kick up the old posteria to get out there in this chilly wind and keep training.

Thank you from me and from The Pattay Orphanage Trust.

Thank you.

Grahame,

Thanks Grahame! I often wondered about your tag-line, "won't shut up", but I see that you put your money where all the words are! Fantastic! Thank you!

Thank you from me of course (your generosity helps get me out there training every day), and thank you so much on behalf of the Pattaya Orphanage.

Thank you again, and all the very best,

Marcus
