Does anyone have any more information about the telephone system James describes below:
quote:
What we've had installed instead is a system that uses normal telephones and sockets in the house but uses what is in effect a mobile phone bolted to the wall and a tall aerial pointed at the nearest cell site for the connection. This has given us a local landline number so can be cheaper to call than a mobile.
(From this thread)
We're looking at having a landline installed for Thaiboi's parents and this system sounds like it might work very well for them. Also, as an alternative, is there a central number for new landline connections in Thailand similar to how we'd phone a central BT number from anywhere in the UK?

Thanks.

All numbers beginning 08 are mobile numbers so that may not be the same system James mentions, which he says was allocated a landline number.

Hi Cliff,

I'll see if I can find out the name of the phone company for you, though it may not be easy without me seeing a bill.

As i said before,

quote:
It seems to be a very popular system as all around Phimai and Khorat you can see many of these tall thin metal poles with small square metal plates at the top.

I would guess that this system is used in rural areas around Khon Kaen too, Paul? I'm pretty sure I've seen them around Ban Sida and Prathai which are about half way to Khon Kaen.

We have a 044 number which I believe is the Nakhon Ratchasima province dialling code.

Hi,

I've been forwarded an email from friend which originally came from someone who lives in the Phimai area.

quote:
Yes, we have a "wireless" system on the 044 number, and it's operated by
TOT. It transmits a signal to a tower in Phi Mai.
