We are off the See Woo tomorrow to stock up on frozen shrimp, rice and other goodies for Nong Kay. However, there is a down-side to eating a lot of Thai food as can be seen in this article.
quote:
Thai physicians and medical researchers find that somewhere between 10 to 14% of all Thais today are suffering from dangerously high levels of cholesterol, which helps explain why heart disease has been the number one killer in the country for more than a decade.
Seafood such as shrimp and squid and coconut milk (which is a staple of Thai dishes) are high in cholesterol. Aod, like many Thai people, has high cholesterol and needs to be very careful about what she eats. Thai food can be healthy, provided you don't overdose on the wrong things.

I also think the salt thing is another worry especially when Thai people move to this country. The heat is not the same therefore they don't sweat as much, so expend less salt.

years back in pattaya staying in same hotel was gentleman from scottish university who had just finnished 12 month study trip in laos based on diets and in conversation said that the lao diet was the most healthy he had studied owing to the high contented of raw vegetable very litte oil used.

he noted that the southern diet was diffrent and like chinese malay as noted shrimp, c/milk etc are high in cholesterol.

my self living on an island it is know all forms of shell fish are high in cholestrol unlike wet fish the healthy option.

There is also a story in "The Nation" today saying that Thai Herbs have been banned in Norway after E coli and salmonella was detected twelve times in the last month.
quote:
The contaminated herbs were lemon grass, cha-om, parsley, coriander, sweet Thai basil, marsh mint, rice paddy herb and Vietnamese coriander.

The Office of Agricultural Affairs in Europe also reported that Iceland had found E coli, salmonella and enterobacteria in 10 kinds of fresh vegetables from Thailand, while Finnish authorities returned a whole lot of two kinds of vegetables contaminated with salmonella, he said.
Getting samonella from Thai basil is not something I would have anticipated.

sako - one of my neighbours is a widow - her husband played sports and was in good shape. He died at 52 of a heart attack. He had a very high choloesterol level, but never never worried about it. One of my best friend's father also died of a heart attack at 50, which she found totally devastating.
