Hi All,
We have a thai shop down the rd, but we would like to have a go at growing our own for a change, i have a greenhouse with a heater which we would like to use. I sent off for some seeds from thailand and have so far got holy basil, pak chi, eggplants, corriander under way in a heated propogator. We have a few shoots already, which is an achievment in itself Does anyone grow any thai hebs/veg? Any tips for a newbie? can i grow somw stuff outside in the garden? i saw the chilli growing contest last year and was facinated to a point that i put up a greenhouse. sad ehh!!! Regards to all Neil |

Label what you are growing is a must.
My wife (whom led me to believe was a farmer) mixed a collection of seeds (holy basil, chillies, pak choi, spring onion, strawberries ect) all together in growing strips No surprises its all my fault for not doing it myself, she says she is no farmer I’ll have to report her to the authorities for lying on her visa application |

A few tips from last year in this thread. Growing Chillies
A lot of work for just a few chillies (and they didn't last long!) I would say corriander and mint are worth growing though. Packpao |

We grew the small hot spanish chilli last year in a large pot outside, they grew very fast a produced tons of hot red chillies, far more than we could eat fresh, so we dreid the rest & put in jars to add to tom yum etc, I kept meaning to get a green house to keep them over winter but forgot. While we were away in LOS for january the plants died in the frost. were growing the same again this year as well as some thai birds eye chillies, they are all outside & so far doing very well. this time I will organise a small greenhouse to over winter them.

I've started a new garden this year and things have been growing really well.
Mint and corriander will grow outside fine. Although mint is supposed to be a very surly and invasive plant. If you plant it in the ground, people suggest to first grow it in a pot, then when its developed, cut off the bottom of the pot and plant the whole pot in the ground. We didn't do this--we planted in the ground in March and its just starting to sprout now! We started everything in trays and when they were old enough replanted in the ground. As for chillis, its still a bit cold, so I take the trays in at night. You can replant them in pots and depending on the time of year can bring them in and out, that way they can make it through the winter. As for eggplant, I think they'd be okay outside. Currently I have small lycee and tamarind trees in the office. They were grown in the propogator and they sit near my desk. I don't think they would survive outside. With enough care (and a spritzer for humidity) I think you could grow anything! Also I would read up on slug-proofing outside (beer traps, copper wire). They love seedlings, and there is nothing sadder than coming out to the headless seedlings in the morning Jessica |
