While Dao was here we were going through vast amounts of the stuff which was explained by her comment :-

"You and your mama & sister do not do right" which translates to we fill the washing up bowl with water/fairy etc then wash and leave on the rack/drainer to dry which according to Dao is wrong (we don't have a dishwaher) Confused

What is the correct way apparantly is to fill the bowl with water and liquid then add extra fairy etc to each plate /saucepan etc individually and stack on the worktop then rinse individually then put in the rack/drainer to dry

Any other similarities on washing up (boring I know but its very quiet on the forum tonight Wink) and Dao is in LOS till I go 24/03/07 Smiler

Colin,
My ex did exactly the same, she said if you leave any soap suds on the washing up it could cause cancer. Crazy

My wife is very water concious....Amm turns on the COLD tap slightly, puts a little fairy liquid on the sponge, then wipes each item, then rinses each item under the cold running tap, never uses the bowl. Confused

Thais will very often first scrub and then rinse each plate individually under the tap. No fairy bubles left on plates (top or bottom)!

When Da came to the UK 4 years ago, we had the same argument. Da used to wash and then rinse every plate one by one. She also said you could get ill from the soap. So i rang Fairy and asked them to settle our argument, they said that washing and putting on the rack without rinsing is fine and its just personal prefrence if you want to rinse. You wont get ill if you don`t rinse. Then they sent me some vouchers for some free bubbly (the soapy type).

Can any of you guys tell me how you persuaded your partners to do the washing up in the first place?

I guess I have spoiled Mam....I have always done the dishes and I suspect it is too late to change now.

By the way, I am very English and I rinse every item under a slow running tap after washing it in a sudsy bowl.

My hands remain as soft and smooth as a baby porcupine's bottom despite this. (No marigolds either !!)

The issue is partially resolved as Pim has finally succumbed to the dishwasher after a mere 3 years. I love watching her toss the stuff in there with the accuracy of a circus juggler and force of an olympic shot putter. Some even land the right way up.
Recently arrived daughter prefers the more traditional method described above. Half to two thirds of a bottle of Fairy on the sponge pad and into the one inch of Cold water in the main sink. Bubbles rising to ceiling height. Wash and stack all dishes precariously on the side. Slowly rinse bubble mountain out of sink with Hot tap on full for half an hour. Add another one inch of Cold water to main sink and replace all dishes. Divert Hot tap on thermo-blast to centre sink and leave running down the drain. Stare dreamily out of the window through clouds of unnecessary steam whilst wiping off the suds in tiny amount of cold water. Then re-stack even more precariously to drain for eternity.
If listening to Korean boy band CD whilst doing this, possibly lose track of where she's up to and re-start the entire process from the beginning.
So much for the environment.
Any sudden movement in the kitchen thereafter brings the whole lot down, eliminating any need to wash the stuff up in the first place. I now appreciate the popularity of everlasting plastic tableware in Thailand. We only buy plain white china, though only two of any one item at a time, to ensure we have matching colour at least.

Yeah - we have had similar "discussions" in our house...

One point is the cold water thing... regardless of how much fairy is used THE WATER NEEDS TO BE HOT!! -IMHO

The wife does it her way and washes in the the sink then rinses a 2nd time around to rinse off the detergent

What has helped is the sponge thingy that has a tube/handle attached where you put in the detergent and it comes out of the sponge bit when you wash the individual plate/cup etc.

- Skippy

Oh the other thing that has helped is when the supermaket has a 3 for 2 on fairy we stock up!!

Oki, I've read this thread with marginal interest, bordering on hmmm, and just not quite getting to Ha.

How to wash bowls/dishes/whatever is fairly simple.

Place one large plastic container on your immediate left, fill it with pure clean water. Place one smaller container directly in front of you full of soapy suds, place another container on your immediate right that is full of pure clean water.

Put anything requiring cleaning of a concave nature into the first container and leave to soak for at least one hour (this is why it needs to be big, three people eating + Thai cooking equals at least twelve concave things)

After one hour, use the specially selected "I'm not going to wear this again" piece of cloth to waft the now soggy rice off the concave receptacles and transfer to container two (one at a time)

In container two, use the 'spongy one end, scratchy the other' or shredded sheet metal to remove anything not taken out in container one..... transfer to container three, swill, shake, hold up to the light, get it quality inspected and stamped by No 5 and drain..... anything that doesn't pass quality control will be used as a Frisbee and will usually end up next door.

P.S. I do the laundry as well Wink Big Grin

Colin, mate, all that snoring was just a joke. Pretty lame I know, but, like you say, it's just a light-hearted thread. And a good one too.

But Packpao and Skippy are right.......

....what is this 'washing up' thingy you're all talking about?
