My wife is the best rice cooker in our house LOL

On a more realistic note, we bought an "Otto" brand cooker in Thailand and just used a PC lead with three pin plug here in the UK. Very cheap and very reliable. The Globe Supermarket, closest one to us is Leamington Spa always have a supply of cookers, if there is one near you, worthwhile giving them a visit. Looking at Kent on the Shopping listing of the forum's home page there are 3 shops listed, Nancy's, Thais'R'Us and Sawasdee... could be worth paying them a visit.

Ikea had some on special a short time ago.
I think I saw some in Robert Dyas the other day that didn't look too bad.

Probaly best to do you research -but actually wait to the MRS is here to have the final decision

Matalan still have rice cookers for a mere £4! We bought another from there just a couple of weeks ago.

What sort of rice cooker? The sort you put into the microwave ... these days in this house that is how all the rice is cooked. Far simpler than using a more traditional type of rice cooker.

I am after a traditional one, dont have a microwave and dont really want to buy one, am wondering now whether it would be better for missus to pick one up from over there, probably cheaper.

Why didn't I think off this before. We needed a an electric bubbly pot thingy and I brought a slow cooker BUT it isn't the same as you get at MK resturant for example.

Get An electric cord (like the one the It dept techies refer to as a Kettle cord) and take it to Thailand and check it fits the appliance befoe purchasing and bringing back to Rip-off Britain. Obviously will need to check the volts or amps are the same

Slight deviation, I admit .... does anyone else microwave their rice? Even since Nat started doing that 2 or 3 years ago the old rice cooker lovingly carried back from Thailand has been gathering dust at the back of a cupboard and hardly ever used.

If you do want to buy an electric rice cooker and live within reasonable distance of a Wing Yip shop, they now have a reasonable selection at prices much much lower than 4 years or so ago.

Upcountry,
Mine is a plug in electric one and cost £15 from Ikea. It does the job perfectly.

Also see the thread below.

Upcountry asked :-

Nat says that it tastes just the same and not only that, there is less waste ... no rice getting stuck to the bottom.

There was a little experimentation originally .... now for the quantity of rice Nat tends to cook ... 11 minutes cooking time ... perfectly cooked rice every time.

Hey folks we are talking about just £4 from your nearest Matalan store ... why not try it?

We used to use a microwave rice cooker that was bought from wing yip for a fiver. I think that must have been when electric rice cookers seemed to be 40 quid plus. It cooked rice very well if you were careful to measure the rice/water ratio correctly.

I remember having to buy a replacement when the original got melted (placed too near the gas cooker was the excuse)

We then upgraded to an electric kenwood that permanently sits on the kitchen worktop and does its job effortlessly - seems much better at larger quantities than the microwave type.

Sticky rice is still done on the gas hob in an aluminium pot and basket - is this the only way for sticky rice?

We have a rice cooker and thats gathering dust.....
My missus prefers the packs from tesco....you get 4 sachets and each one is ideal meal size..just bung in microwave for 4 mins and its ready....

Personally i thinks its less hassle and better...
But as the cookers are so cheap you may as well get hold of one and see what you prefer..

When we have suki (a la MK) we just do it in the rice cooker. Seems to work fine. Boils it up and then keeps it hot.

Depends how good you want the rice you eat i guess....
I would imagine its gotta be better if you use a proper cooker and use decent rice...but to me rice is rice...

put it with sauce, spices and it all tastes same to me....

give me a fry up, egg & chips or a kebab anyday Cool

upcountry dont get me wrong i love thai food...

And i eat it whenever my wife has it but just recently we seem to be eating more and more english grub....

My missus actually prefers a roast dinner now over a lot of the meals she cooks....

Thats one of the great things about having thai wives...we have a choice of what we can have...some people never even try thai food in thier lives Smiler

( just seeing the word kebab on this page though has made me order one, i have zero willpower when it comes to kebabs ) LOL

If your missus is anything like mine she will let you know if the rice is up to scratch or not....we tried all sorts when we first come over...now its just tesco own brand LOL

still working fine 3years later and use a shave plug adapter.

Andrew,
Why do you use a shave plug adaptor ? Take the Thai plug off and put an English one on. Job done.

See HERE for more details.
