A former public schoolboy was barbecued by his Thai wife after divorcing her when she ran up massive gambling debts, a court has heard.

Toby Charnaud, 41, was clubbed to death with an iron bar and wooden staves by relatives of his ex-wife, Pannada Laoruang.

She then helped them burn his body on a charcoal fire, before chopping it up and scattering the charred remains around Kaeng Krajan National Park on the Thai-Burma border.

This is not a new murder case though, it was first reported in May last year although its only now come to court.

Funny how Dao, who never reads Thai papers or keeps up with the news at all really, has heard about this story...

Not so funny is the pleasure she takes from it.

Seriously though, if the husband had such firm suspicions, I wonder why he decided to go out there to the village alone. Somehow I doubt the short story is evidence of a real suspicion. Just a horrible co-incidence.

Thais seem to be far less squeamish than we are. A friend of my wife used to regularly buy what we called her 'murder magazines'. These seem to specialise in reporting murders and accidents and provide truly horrific crime scene / accident scene photographs. I always find it hard to believe that these magazines are not 'top shelf' publications but are available at supermarket checkouts

Returned to work today and the entire office were talking about this as I was in HH when the story hit the papers on 02/08/06!
