I think there is every chance that all those sent to prison might find themselves deported on release - and perhaps never to return.

Well from this week the UK will be a lot safer for traffickers
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/nov/10/human-traff...-police-prostitution http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/police-t...-closed-1006612.html This week The Home Office anounced the closure of the Met Police Human Trafficking Team. Oh I can not wait for the next election. Richard |

I find it hard to believe that someone would pay £30000 to travel here. Isnt it more likely that the money is given upfront and then paid back. Its not unheard of for the family to sell the daughter to obtain cash or pay off a debt.
Either way its not right. I can see a use for those dogs at Guantamano Bay when it closes. Honour good men, be courteous to all men, bow down to none. |

Roberrt, No one paid £30,000, that is the amount demanded off the girls for their freedom. You will see from the link offerred by Caller that 'Helen' was sold to two women and a man for £11,000 who then told her she would have to pay off the £30,000. |

From the second of Richard's links: "Britains's largest dedicated human trafficking police unit is being shut down just a year after it was set up because of Home Office spending cuts, The Independent has learnt." Unbelievable. How do you register to vote from abroad? Marcus |

I would very much like to meet these unfortunate women. The gang members made £3.5 million. I would guess that some of it is recoverable were any of these ladies to launch civil actions for damages against the gang members for false imprisonment and a whole raft of other ills done to them.

Most of these women were certainly not 'unfortunate', they were fully aware of what was occurring and fully agreed to the conditions. I'm not saying for one minute it is right but it is certainly the truth and many of these girls are no shrinking violets.
It is an extremely well known thing to do in Thailand, there have been Thai documentaries on it and plenty of warnings and publicity. It's also featured in Thai soap story-lines. They know full well what they are getting into. |

Whatever they may have agreed to its not what they got. What they got is brought and sold. Unfortunate or not they will be a lot more fortunate if me and my team get to them and we start to go after the real bad boys and girls where it hurts. In the pocket. Richard |

What I'm trying to say is that many of these girls are no more than criminals themselves. |

"They got no more than they deserved" the age old men's view of exploited women! From first hand knowledge I can assure you that Thai women can be very gullible and naive. It sometimes shocks me how trusting Thai women can be. In many cases they are assured by "friends" or neighbours in their village that everything will be fine. Driven by poverty and dreams of a different life, plus seeing other women in the village with money they get themselves into all sorts of horrible situations. The same goes for the men who are frequently exploited by gang masters and agents overseas. I cannot be the only one with cousins working anywhere from Saudi to Taiwan who are underpayed and work for years to pay off debts that took them to a promised land paved with gold? |

I think some might be fully aware of what they were to face (perhaps not about exactly how much they will have to pay) but others will have been duped. They may not know exactly what is expected of them or how much it will cost them to 'redeem' themselves from these disgusting individuals.
Despite what you may see in Thai documentaries, I have firsthand experience of what actually happens to many of these girls. Whilst many may not be 'shrinking violets' many are seriously physically and mentally abused, live in fear, have massive debts and have no freedom. Some actually have no idea what they are coming to, offered jobs, a partner that just do not exist. Tobias - โทเบียส |

The law does not criminalize the sale of ones own body just the sale of other peoples Richard |

While i was with Ja last Dec/Jan in our salon, a middle aged Thai lady that knew Ja came to the shop talking about her last trip to australia.(she is married to an australian) She was trying to talk Ja into going on holiday with her to europe all expenses paid. This offer was turned down quickly by Ja. On Talking with Ja this week she told me that this woman had come back to Huahin and wanted to see Ja. Apparently this women Wanted Ja and her 2 sisters to go back to australia with her as she said she could get them a job in a massage shop for 1 month earning 4,000 baht a day. Again Tickets visa etc all paid for. I will not tell you what my comments were, but these things as far as im concerned, are deffinately dodgy. This woman also mentioned that her Farang husband was now Dead and buried. |

I see what you mean DavidJohn. I only read the first link Caller posted. That was bad enough.
I cant understand why the people trafficking force has been disbanded as I thought Harriet Harman had said she was taking a tough line on all prostitution. Honour good men, be courteous to all men, bow down to none. |

Where would they sit in the food chain? If confiscation is being pursued with all recovered monies initially heading to the treasury, what's the chance of any being left over for individual claims? Securing an order and securing money are two different things? On the fate of the trafficking unit, was this reported elsewhere or just the independent? And if it was, were they quoting the Home Office or Independent? |

SteveR, I know exactly where you are coming from, My wife is a hairdresser and she use to do the hair of a few of these ladies from the Paddington and bayswater area of london, and became quite close to some of them also, before the going rate to come over here was £23k and it would take the girls about 2/3 months to pay of there debt, The girls would earn a minimum of £150 per hour and £50 of that goes to the owner of the website who booked the ladies which they would collect once a week. With so much money earned the girls can't really do a lot with there money, everything is cash, they can't bank it and they have to be carefull sending it abroad, most of the girls my wife new would spend it on cocaine or spend most of the early hours in the casino, most of the ladies had english boyfriends actually quite young maybe early 20's and they new what the girls did as a job, in fact the ladies would spoil there boyfriends with fast cars and big toys. Orientalgems has gone out of business because of this particular case, but there are a number of websites i can show you right now that are carrying on with this business, supply and demand thats what this game is all about. Cheers |

We'll conveniently forget about the fraudulent obtaining of visas, the visa breaches once here, traveling on false passports, the fact that most of these girls intend to work as prostitutes in the UK (not illegal, but certainly immoral), tax evasion etc. Some of us have actual contact with these girls, customs agents, police etc and actually know the reality. The same old sob story has been used many times and in many countries - One of the major reasons that Australian airports have a facial recognition system is because these 'sex slaves' turn up a few months later on a new passport. (obviously hoodwinked again) Seriously, if you want the truth go visit one and find out her story - plenty of other websites and phone-box cards advertising them. They are largely here voluntarily and enjoying the money and lifestyle. As I've said elsewhere and noted above in another post - they payback their £20K over a few months and then are freelancer earning more than most of us do, in cash. |

I think some members are getting there wire's crossed, Talking about the original post regarding 'Orientalgems' the girls i know about are not sex slaves they are high class prostitutes they start of as prostitutes in Thailand and then they join there friends in Hong Kong, Singapore and London, they earn massive amounts of money, all cash, they know once they come here they cannot go to Paris for the weekend or for a week to greece because they don't have a valid passport, they have to stay here, all the girls my wife use to know, long to go home and see there family but with the money they are earning and the risk' off getting caught with customs they choose to stay here..
Now sexslaves I don't really know about, except what i have read in the newspapers, eg: ladies sitting in locked rooms not allowed to leave paid £20 per client and maybe see about £10 of that, and i think there passports are taken of them and maybe regulary beaten by there mafia pimps. I just think maybe some members are confusing sexslaves and the ladies from Orientalgems. Cheers |
