Coup rumours widely spread

Coup rumours were widely spread Tuesday night after the Third and Fifth Army areas moved their four battalions out.

But officers from the two army areas said the forces were moved to be stationed in the three southern border provinces as part of personnel rotation there.

The 31st Infantry Regimen also moved out its personnel as part of the rotation with soldiers in the deep South, the officers said.

The 23rd and 24th Cavalry Battalions and the Second Cavalry Division also moved out their personnel to rotate with soldiers at the Pha Muang Task Force in Phetchabun.

The officers said the massive movements of the soldiers apparently led to the coup rumours.

Coup speculation updated

Channel 9 and 5 have been ordered to stand by for special announcement as coup speculation reached the highest pitch.

Coup was widely speculated after many army units were moved out of their barracks on pretext of personnel rotation.

Sources said Channel 5 would broadcast an announcement by the military at 10 pm while Channel 9 may broadcast announcement of caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra from New York.

Channel 5 is playing songs in praising of His Majesty the King in an indication that an announcement may be made soon.

Earlier, the day an army source said Army Commander-in-Chief has instructed all army units in Bangkok to standby for an important event.

Initial view seems to be this is a preemptive action by Thaksin. Whatever, it is sad news for Thailand and puts the country right back where it was in the 70s and 80s.

All the Thai TV channels are now "off-air" (taken over by military?) and playing songs featuring the King.

BBC/CNN still getting through on UBC/Cable.

Confused Not what the BBC are saying on both Radio 5 and News 24, nor Sky News nor CNN. Confused The general consensus from them is that it's anti-Thaksin elements in the army concerned that he's going to win the election. Damn democracy! The proles keep voting for the wrong party!

Just phoned Pick in Bangkok, whose main concern was that I'd woken him up! "I'll find out tomorrow," he said. Shrug

I wonder how easy it will be for Thaksin to return from New York given the current situation - an enforced (temporary) exile seems likely until things calm down.

What a sad day for democracy.

Looks now as if the coup may have succeeded, with the sacked army C in C entering government house and issuing orders.

Agence France-Presse (AFP) is reporting that army officers loyal to the sacked army C-in-C have seized control of Government House, but this is unconfirmed.

Breaking : military coup in Thailand
Soldiers have entered Government House and tanks have moved into position around the building in Thailand in what can only be described as a military coup. Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has responded by declaring a state of emergency in Bangkok.

Mr Thaksin who is currently out of the country attending the United Nations in New York stated that he had removed the chief of the army and had ordered troops to cease any attempts to "move illegally".

It appears that conflict is imminent as two separate army factions have now declared their allegiance. One side backing the prime minister and the other side backing a rebel army chief.

Does anyone know what the King's view is on all of this. Is it likely that he will step in and bang some heads together? Presumably, anyone who's involved would ultimately respect any direction given by the King?

It appears the forces behind the coup are saying they are loyal to the King.

Watching the pictures on the TV it would appear that the forces involved are indeed loyal to the King - judging by the yellow wristbands and ribbons being worn... even attached to weapons and tanks etc!

Having said that, I would expect the King to remain above these events - as he has done in the past - unless an impass is reached and loss of life sustained...

... no doubt there'll be plenty of time for Him and others to bang heads together lately (always fun to watch him admonish Thaksin on TV)

He did step in to end the coup in 1992 but not until the conflict had continued for some time. He's not very keen on Thaksin, is he, so he may react differently this time anyway.

A friend who runs a company in Bangkok got a tip off from a well-connected employee and was given an hour to get his staff off to their homes. He says that all TV and Radio stations are off the air and ThaiCom have had their power turned off (this was 30 minutes ago). Just for once, I'm quite happy not to be there ......

Though he's not a fan of Thaksin he knows the opposition leaders behind the coup and says they are an even less attractive alternative.

Thai Army Commander-In-Chief Has Taken Power -Official

BANGKOK (AP)--A senior Thai military official, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation, said that Army Commander- in-Chief Gen. Sondhi Boonyaratkalin had used the military to take over power from the prime minister.

The Thai military launched a coup against Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra on Tuesday, circling his offices with tanks, seizing control of television stations and declaring a provisional authority loyal to the king.

An announcement on Thai television channel 5 declared that a "Council of Administrative Reform" with King Bhumibol Adulyadej as head of state had seized power in Bangkok and nearby provinces without any resistance.
