My missus is coming over to London in about a months time and she is a nervous flyer any-way so I have spent the last few hours explaining we are not going to get bombed on the plane and that going by boat made from bamboo isn't an option either. Roll Eyes

Does anyone know if the clear plastic bag and no hand luggage policy is in operation at DM airport?
Wanida is coming back Sunday night (Emirates) and can get no info on the subject.

Ian, the current security requirements affect ALL flights either departing or arriving in the UK.

I have just spoke with the Emirates desk at DM, they say that it is NOT affected and passengers can take normal hand luggage on board.
Seems to be a bit of a conflict here.

Ian, just had a look at the updated briefing notes and it now says:

quote:
... the following arrangements apply to all passengers starting their journey at a UK airport and to those transferring between flights at a UK airport ...
So that is consistent with the information you have been given by Emirates.

It is only for direct flights to U.K.
Emirates don't fly direct to U.K.
I am flying Thai on Wednesday and have been told no hand luggage. It is also on the television news about no hand luggage on direct flights to U.K.

Hmmm...... let's think about this one.

Arabic airline, transfers are in the Middle East, the flight is full of people of a Muslim persuasion.

Probably the least likely hijack target ever.

That's why they even hand out metal knives and forks with the meals Big Grin

Given a choice between having a bomb or pla-la on board a plane, I know which I would prefer. Wink

A qatar arways jet from Doha to Jordan was subject to a hijack attempt last week, Guess who I am flying with in November Frowner

Qatar Airways flight in hijack scare

Doha • Qatar Airways yesterday confirmed that a 22-year-old Eritrean male national was restrained and overpowered by crew and passengers while trying to storm into the cockpit on board an Airbus A300-600 flight from Amman (Jordan) bound for Doha.

The incident occurred soon after take-off early yesterday evening, an airline statement said. As a result, Flight QR401, carrying 12 crew members and 267 passengers, had to return to Queen Alia Internaional Airport.

The statement said a male cabin crew member overpowered the man and with the help of three passengers, restrained him before the aircraft landed safely in Amman. The unruly passenger was then handed over to local police.

The flight had left Amman at 1633 hours (local time) and was scheduled to arrive at Doha International Airport at 1905 hours local time.

The flight left for Doha later yesterday once the Jordanian authorities and airline officials were satisfied the airline was safe for take-off.

Earlier, news agencies had reported the incident was a hijack bid, quoting Qatar Airways spokesperson Salam Al Shawa telling the Al Jazeera channel that a man had attempted to enter the cockpit carrying a box containing an unspecified substance.

However, later agency reports out of Amman stated that Jordanian authorities attributed the incident to a quarrel and not a hijacking attempt. The Jordanians said that the man insisted on using the restroom soon after take-off but was prevented from doing so by cabin crew as passengers were not allowed to leave their seats at that time.

Amman airport security officials confirmed that the refusal angered the passenger who insisted on speaking to the captain to complain about his in-flight crew's behaviour.

The timing of the incident could not have come at a worse time with the air transport industry already reeling from the security situation prevailing at airports in the UK.

I'm there

All flights that land at Heathrow are "direct" flights from the airport of departure!

The current provisions only apply to " ... all passengers starting their journey at a UK airport and to those transferring between flights at a UK airport ...".

As far as i am aware all airlines departing to an airport within the UK such as Thai airways are adopting the new security rules, whether this is a department of transport requirement that they do so i am not sure.
I do believe these security checks will have to be relaxed some what in the next few days otherwise Heathrow will come to a complete stand still.

mmm

Thai inbound to Heathrow, still the original restrictions (plastic bag, no liquids etc, no electronics except in checked luggage)
from the Thai site
Outbound from Heathrow the relaxed restrictions ( smaller carry on, electronics OK, no liquids etc)
From Baa siteincluding a new PDF leaflet giving detailed information.

So at the moment there are more restrictions on Thai inbound to the UK than outbound ! Hopefully it will even itself out soon as it seems a bit daft that you can listen to your MP3 outbound, but, have to check it in when you fly back.
