Dark days in Thailand, I,m afraid, as Thaksin speeds up his inevitable transformation into a full blown dictator.

quote:
All eyes on Lumpini Park - November 25, 2005
All eyes will be on Lumpini Park today at 6pm as Sondhi holds his Thailand Weekly show. This week has been jittery with government figures fretting over coup rumors and what would happen if someone threw a bomb into Sodhi's supporters. On Thursday, the courts rejected an arrest warrant for Sodhi while the Army Chief vowed that "there will never be another coup d'etat in Thailand."
Many will be watching to see if the slow escalation of allegations of government misconduct will continue. For many, both inside and outside the government, this series of events is an exceedingly rare change to damage or even unseat Thaksin--although the power is really Thaksin's to loose. The PM's has, perhaps wisely, taken a vow of silence.

It must be a bad day in the office for me today - I was expecting another thread about ... ... bird flu!

Interesting Topic IanB.

was having a chat with a few mates last week who have lived in LOS for a long time and they see the attitudes changing, but for them the gradual Thaksination of thailand was not their prime worry, but what the hell is going to happen when the king dies, as none of the siblings appart from the eldest daughter are as regarded very highly amongst most Thai's, and there is nothing in the consititution that allows a Queen.

The death of the king is in their opinion going to be the most troublesome time...... especially if Thaksin is still in power.

I got it Toby Smiler

The "Taksin is plotting a coup and the King is the only buffer" is an increasing thread amongst the ex pat community and one which gets ever louder every couple of months.

Theres some good points raised here. But I personally think Mc-Bush and JF-KFC has more influence here than is recognised. If anywhere is going to stay stable in that area it will be Thailand.
