Just read the article there is nothing new in it and it will take along time for things to get better for young ill educated thai girls just visit thai villiages and see the amount of young girls with one or two babies just sitting around doing nothing. The bright lights of Bangkok or Pattaya must seem as the only way ahead. at the end of the day better schooling and an incentive to learn has got to be the answer

True...Many girls are unhappy... Cry

But...some girls have a close-network of friends for support, an income a lot greater than working in a factory or 7-11, meet some nice guys, travel the country and even get married.

Everyone has choices to make Confused

And yes education is the answer, for the girls and for their parents and the monetary demands they place on their offspring.

Previous post: "education is the answer"

Having qualifications will not guarantee a financially comfortable life for a Thai or their loved ones.

Many graduates in LOS find themselves without their desired occupation from what I gather(my neice and classmates) just cant attain employment meeting their expectations.

Bar girls on the other hand can take home about 20 pounds plus per night.
I continually refuse to agree or disagree with any side in this situation.

It happens- we should not judge who is right or wrong

That is because the jobs just don't exist inside of Thailand, and a Thai qualification is next to useless outside of the country (no Thai fails an exam, ever, ask anyone who has ever taught here)

I had a look at the 'Nightlight' website.

This is a typical quote, it comes from the December 2005 newsletter (chosen at random):
quote:
"At a joint Christmas party with 'The Well', three women accepted Christ and although they are not sure what it means and are still hanging on to Buddhist roots, we are seing their hearts open up"

The problem I have isn't with trying to help bar girls find alternatives, it's with the evangelical side of things. That phrase "still hanging on to Buddhist roots" is awful. Does it mean that in exchange for a new job these girls have to change religion, change culture, uproot?

But, having said that, I wonder if there is any Buddhist help for these people? I don't know.

Packpao?

Totally agree with your reservations about the evangelical angle but I wouldn't spend too long looking for a specifically Buddhist alternative.

I much prefer the practical and realistic approach of Empower

Seems a very conservative estimate! Some will earn several times that, but, of course, some will average much less. Even so, compared to the alternatives, legal minimum <£3 per day, thousands working illegally for less, it must look like something worth considering.

Can't argue with that.

I'm a little surprised to see this story posted in the forums as I understood we were steering clear of "bar girl" stories. That said, Ireland's Sunday World ran a four-page undercover investigation yesterday's paper about how "Irish Sleazes Are Flocking Here For Sex". It features the area around Walking Street in Pattaya. I can probably have the report scanned if anyone is interested. In the meantime, click the link below to view "extracts from the secret filming carried out by our undercover team in the clubs and vice dens of Sin City".

Secret Filming Video

I've seen this shocking video (nudge, nudge) and didn't see anything you won't see any Saturday night in a UK city centre.
