Does anyone know what networks give 3G Videophone coverage in LOS, And at what costs ?
I know they have Hutch which is basically the same company we know as 3 in UK,but i think Hutch only do contract rather than prepay.
can you help me what networks are avail with 3G on pay as you go ?
I was looking to send a motorola C975 3 handset (unlocked) out to the family,
Has anyone any experience of this ?

Hutch in LOS uses CDMA2000 technology which is totally incompatible with UMTS (the standard used by UK's 3 network). I haven't yet heard of a CDMA2000/UMTS dual-band handset.

In short, the handset is useless in LOS.

My suggestion is just to get a decent GSM phone as there's much better choice of networks and infrastructure (=reception) in LOS (and the UK for that matter). Also, GSM will be around for many more years. Perhaps use the Internet when you need video.

They could use an unlocked '3' phone from the UK as they are dual standard (GSM/UMTS) but it will need a GSM/DTAC/True service and there won't be any video conferencing facility over those networks.

3G is going to be a very expensive white elephant for the UK networks.

Hi Packao
Thanks for the info,
Shame it wont work.
I have a old Motolola lying around which if i put it on ebay would probably only fetch up to about £20-00.
Thought it would have been a good idea if we could have sorted it,
Will have to look at how much to get a Hutch phone / Sim out there.
I presume i could do it that way ?
Thanks

Some handsets here but I'm not sure if they include prices.

BTW, I've heard nothing good about their reception (esp outside BKK)

If you check the specifications for the phone (try http://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_c975-804.php) it appears that the phone will work on GSM900, 1800 and 1900 and therefore will work in Thailand.

The main problem with the UK software is that it is not Thai language enabled.

We got a Motorola E1000 (3G) unlooked in Thailand and it works with a 1-2-Call (AIS) sim on the GSM network but it is more difficult to find unlockers. We ended up at the Mall Nongwongwan, but I'm sure it can be done in MBK but it cost 600B which they said was 6 times as much as a Nokia.

Anyway it works (with no Thai).

So it can be done.

Regards

Martin

No 3G licenses have yet been issued in Thailand for operators to support this type of service.

Finding someone to unlock your phone in MBK is very easy and i am usually charged around 300 baht, expect to pay a little more if your phone is more complexed as they will charge you to get the cables in order to unlock it!!

However beware, my best mate and his wife have just returned from BKK and they purchased a rather fancy Sharp 904 all singing all dancing superb phone ( well is now ) told it would work in the uk ( no ) and had a vodafone emblem on the front they paid just under £300 for what i understand is about a £1,000 phone if your were able to purchase it from vodafone as a handset only, it did not work here, it was still working under Korean software, but will only work with a vodafone sim card, and as they do not stock this model yet, any questions they have about it have to go through sharp. A real headache when this happens to people, fortunately i get the missus to get mine!!

I used to be indecisive.....but now i'm not so sure!!!
