Further to my post on the 7th September regarding 07744 numbers.

I received my phone bill yesterday and I was not charged for the calls I made to LOS using the 007744, just taken from my free X minutes. I am with Orange, you can check here for other mobile company's.

I get my calls on contract, but its through work, so dont really want to get fired for racking up a huge bill if I can help it

if you go to the link in the original post it tells you this works with O2 but it is a different access number. like i say go to the link and it gives you all the details

Have you tried the T-UK number? 0844 calls are included in most o2 minutes - and by doing that you support the forum!

The danger with these 07744 numbers is that all the mobile networks will eventually start charging - some already charge 75p per minute depending on tariff! And once you go over your 'free' allowance these are charged at a higher rate too - unlike the 0844 which is usually charged (with o2 at least) at the normal land-line rate.

You'll have to give T-Mobile a call about that A&A, it may be included but that may be dependent on which tariff is being used.

The original link says 07744 numbers are free with T-mobile.

That might be so Lucky, but 07744 calls are considered "premium rate" calls with some networks. A&A is asking about the Thailand-UK 0844 service - he wanting to help support the forum rather than some cash rich network.

I think in support of Lucky, A&A, Myself and anyone else using the 077 option we are interested in saving ourselves substantial amounts of money. If that means using "some cash rich network" so be it.
My own feeling about calling my network, orange, to enquire about the 0844 number is that it will only alert them to the fact that i intend to use it and increase the possibility of changing their 'rules' regarding such number

That I have no doubt, and I am casting no aspersions on those who use whatever services they choose to make telephone calls. All my point is (responding to a specific question raised by a member referring to o2 and T-Mobile) is that there is an "alternative" option that will benefit the forum.

0844 numbers are now in wide usage for all kinds of services just like 0845 numbers. Some mobile networks include these numbers in their 'inclusive' minutes and then charge just the "normal land-line rate" after those inclusive minutes have expired.

If you go over your inclusive minutes by 100 minutes on o2 using the 0844 number then this will cost just £10 - go over by 100 mins using the 07744 number and that will set you back a whopping £50!

As for 07744, as I have said many many times in the forum, these are NOT mobile numbers but a 'number translation service'. Consequently some networks consider these numbers to be "premium numbers" and charge up to 75p per minute depending on network and tariff. There are many examples of people who have used 07744 numbers believing them to be "inclusive" only to find a telephone bill in excess of £150!

Phoning a network for clarification of a calling rate will not alert that network about the number or cause them to increase the price. All networks are provided with full details of all telephone number ranges, their usage, their charging, their accessibility and the cost that network/carrier has to pay over to the 'owning' network.

I am no legal expert, like yourself, so perhaps you can advise.
077 numbers are indeed designated by OFCAM (formerly OFTEL) as mobile numbers, not as personal service numbers. Therefore anyone charged at Premium rate for these calls surely has a case of asking for re-calculation as the mobile company will be contradicting its own terms

The numbers are designated as mobile numbers by OFCOM - but these are high rate mobile numbers that are not associated with a 'mobile network' they are more akin to personal numbering or number translations services. It is for this reason that more and more networks are beginning to charge for access to these numbers. Why? Because the mobile network you use to make these calls has to pay to the owners of the 07744 service 17p per minute!

Any telephone network can charge what they like for making calls to each number type - provided they publish the rates. There is much grumbling going on in the industry about the 07744 and 07755 number ranges that changes are afoot.

o2 and Three are two networks that DO charge for access to 07744/07755 numbers. Yes, your argument has some merit but the fact of the matter is that these numbers are NOT actually mobile numbers. Accordingly any challenge in court would be fraught with problems - yes, the number range is 'designated' a mobile number and your tariff includes minutes to 'other mobiles'; however, when you the caller use that 07744/07755 number to call internationally YOU the caller KNOW that the number you are calling is NOT a mobile! Effectively, the number range is being abused.

So no, mobile networks will not necessarily be contradicting their own terms.

However, my reading about this in the past revealed that Orange did infact begin charging for such numbers early 2005 but reversed their decision when they realised they contradicted their own terms. It is thought that Orange can afford to pay the 'termination' fee you refer to in your previous post, and realised that many would merely terminate their contract which would be more costly to them.
Of course all of this is simply views that other people have expressed in a forum, whether they are based on facts is another matter

Orange have clearly taken a 'commercial view' on the matter, indeed a couple of years ago I acted for a disgruntled customer in recovering £793 from Orange for the same thing! We were very lucky to win, the argument came down to not 'adequately publishing' the tariff.

o2 and Three have also taken a 'commercial view' and they specifically exclude 07744/07755 numbers from their inclusive minutes. Other networks are soon to follow - indeed on some tariffs other networks already charge as I mentioned above.

i can't believe people can get caught out using these numbers by not realising they have used up their call allowance

with 'online bills' and 'recent calls made' available to view online 24 hours a day surely poeple should check their allownces

you can even do it by phoning customer services and using the automated system

so in your opinion, putting to one side the forums benefits, we will all be better off finding out from our mobile network regarding the 0844 number as sooner rather than later you feel the other networks will soon restrict the use of 07744 number
