Hi, tried calling friends in Thailand using the new numbers with no luck. Used the 'old' number and through no trouble at all.
Anyone heard of any problems implementing the changeover?
Andy.

Hi, thanks for the replies.
Just wondering why we couldn't connect using the 'new' number thats all. After all they were supposed to come into effect today.

My wife has just come off the phone and it worked fine using the new number+668 but it did seem to take longer to connect.

Hi Andy

Have called a few people today using the new numbers without any problem. Six of us sat in the pub last night calling each other at 1 minute past midnight to try it out. LOL

Your mention is the first I've heard so far. Let's hope it's a one off. What's the first 4 digits of the old number you're calling?

Lucky is quite correct, the grace period runs to the end of November.

Hey..... it's busy life when it's one problem per week .... or Ice Age.... whichever comes first Wink

The number change has confused most people over here.

Hi,

Does your SIM card need to be updated with the "new" number? If so how do you do this?

thanks

James,
No, it doesn't. Just stick an 8 infront of the number when you tell people your number and it will work fine.

No, SIM cards do not use your phone number for identification on the network. Instead they use an IMSI (International Mobile Subscriber Identity) number, which remains unchanged.

The only changes you need to make to your mobile phone are:

  1. Update your phonebook entries for all Thai mobile phone numbers.

  2. Update your "Message Settings", changing the "Message Centre Number" to the new 10-digit number. For example, with AIS:

    • GSM Advance: change from +6618110888 to +66818110888.
    • GSM1800: change from +6613101800 to +66813101800.
    • 1-2-Call: change from +6618310808 to +66818310808.

Thanks for the speedy replies chaps!

I'd just read this on the bangkok post website and wasn't sure of the implications:

quote:
The Big Switch began; with around 30 million phones to handle in 60 days, techies at yuppiephone shops around the country buckled down to the tedious business of upgrading the SIMs for 10-digit numbers; in the first 72 hours after mobile phones went behind the 8-ball, 610,000 owners showed up at shops of No 1 and No 2 yuppiephone firms AIS and DTAC; the weirdest number change in telephone history requires upgrading all mobile phones to handle 10 digits while all fixed-line phones are left at nine.

AFAIK, the mobile shops simply run a software program on the phone to auto-update the phone book and message centre number. Half the people going into the shops for this service could probably have done it manually while they were waiting in the queue. Crazy

Thanks again Paul,

last question, my SIM is not registered, do you think that this is going to be an issue?

Friday night and the sun is over the yardarm.... (probably rising over the otherside in Thailand)
