The Damage Done Twelve Years of Hell in a Bangkok Prison Warren Fellows
In 1978 Warren Fellows was convicted of heroin trafficking between Thailand and Australia. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in the notorious Bang Kwang prison - better known as the Bangkok Hilton. It was the beginning of 12 years of hell in a place where sewer rats and cockroaches are the only nutritious food, where prison guards laugh as they deliver pulverising blows and where the worst punishment is the khun deo - solitary confinement, Thai style. The Damage Done is one man's story of an unthinkable nightmare. It is not Warren Fellows' plea for forgiveness nor his denial of guilt, but a story of endurance and survival and the abuse of human rights during the decade of a life wasted in leg irons. It is an essential read: heartbreaking, fascinating and impossible to put down.

Or indeed bring drugs out of Thailand! The bit about the cockroach in the Frenchman's ear was galling almost in the extreme (I'm not spoiling anything here I hope - I seem to recall that incident is mentioned on the back cover or somesuch place to lure the reader in further). I found this to be a straightforward, down to earth book written in an engagingly personable manner and it certainly did lead me to think more about 'criminals' and the punishment meted out to them (not that I've ever been a "lock 'em up and throw away the key" type anyway) (Hang 'em! Hang 'em high!) (*Coughs*) and did lead me to jetison the large sports bag I was carrying with me on the flight I read this book on.
~~~ Don't fight for a revolution the leaders of which would hang you were they to win ~~~
Hi all, just seen the new section, Damage Done was a great book. For a more up to date view of being locked up in LOS try looking at the "Letters from the inside" part of the Farang Online site. I think they were written by an American Guy who recieved his pardon a few months ago. Not a book I know ,but good letters nonetheless.Cheers
I think Gregory's book is much better thqn Fellows tall tales ie the elephant playing football with a guy.
Fellows admits he had been drug running for years and whinges about his punishment at every turn - and his is not a victimless crime.
There are two books listed on Amazon by Warren Fellows. The second one was written after Damage Done and is called 4,000 Days. Is the second one better than the first?
Also, the previous post refers to a book by Gregory. What's the name of the book? Thanks!
After promising myself to buy this book for a few years now, I've finally got round to reading it in one sitting, just couldn't put it down. A stark insight into "life" in Bangkok jails. Fellows makes no excuses for his wrong doing, just self-confessed stupidity. Guilty as sin, but surely even the most cynical of people, after reading this book, would admit he's well and truly served his time .. and more.
Thinking of taking drugs in or out of Thailand? Read This First. Terrifying.
Have just started on Sandra Gregory's book. A longer read and more recent in time. Will post a review on that once I've finished it.
