The story is about Ben and Emma and Ben's affair with a Thai girl, Fon. After leaving university, Emma is reluctantly persuaded to go to Thailand with Ben but cracks in their relationship quickly show. When Emma goes her own way, it is not long before Ben falls head over heels in love with Fon, though she claims to be a traditional girl and is not to be easily won.

I picked this one up in Don Muang to clean out the last pile of 20 baht notes that I seem to find in folds as soon as I get near the airport. Is it just me...?
The story is pretty straightforward, and is pretty much plot-free. The focus very much appears to be explaining the difficulties a Thai lady can get into if she considers a romance with farang. The appealing aspect is that it riest o tell the story in pretty ordinary terms - there's no great tragedy or drive in the story, only the real experience of Thai life. I don't remember Koh Samet being quite as glorious as he describes it...
It's fairly lightweight stuff, and doesn't seem to achieve much. If it makes a reader realise what problems a good Thai girl can have when the farang comes a-lusting, then I'm sure the author will be satisfied.

I too bought this at Don Muang and when I started reading it I found it similar to "Butterfly Man", however, towards the end (middle to end) it went a bit downhill. At the end all I could think of was that it does not compare to "Butterfly Man" in the least and the author is leaving the book open to do a sequel if he can be bothered. Left me feeling dissappointed.

I read this in Phuket and found it to be a nice easy nothing special holiday read. Not boring or taxing, and a "page turner".
Ian, I think the book just ran out of steam and ground to a halt. I can't imagine a further edition. Actionally I thought that the ending was a bit sad and it's that which dissapointed me.
