Patpong Sisters
An American Woman's View of the Bangkok Sex World

Cleo Odzer

Cleo Odzer, a young American anthropologist, spent three years studying Bangkok’s well known red-light district, Patpong, where she got to know the bar girls, bar boys and their varied entourages. She gained their confidence, interviewed them at length, lived among them, and accompanied some of them home to visit their families. It is a non-fiction, personalised story about the sex workers in the area, including a romance between her and one of her male "subjects."

Interesting book, Patpong and in all it's glory in detail. When I eventually went to Patpong (because of this book, and with my wife!) I felt like I had been there before and knew where I was going.

This book is just a love story

Cleo claims to be 'researching' for her PhD but she spends way too much time describing her insecurities.
We are forced to injure the ups and downs of her fling with 'Jek' her Thai boyfriend before having to read about her exploits with other young (much younger than her) Thai men.

At the same time she condemns farang men who visit Thailand to have paid sex with Patpong bar girls but she fails to ever see the clear link between her behaviour and the men's behaviour she is 'studying & observing'.

The author is full of self importance. First she believes the Thai government have sent the secret police after her then it is a Thai mafia hit man.

There seems to be a lack of empathy towards most of the characters in her book

One reviewer on Amazon describes Dr Cleo as 'Bambi goes to Bangkok’. This is very accurate.

she has 2 other books that are available on amazon but have nothing to do with thaiand.
one of her books is called goa freaks
she was a member of the hippie community there and appears to have led a very interesting life. she passed away in Goa in 2002
this is her website

Interesting read, provided you don't take it too seriously.
