You'll Never Walk Alone A Woman's Quest for Her Brother's Release from the Bangkok Hilton Debbie Singh
The story of how a Liverpool-born woman rescued her brother from the notorious Bangkok Hilton prison. Debbie ran a boutique in Perth, Australia and was married with three children. Out of the blue in 1998, she discovered her brother, John Doran, had been locked up in Thailand’s notorious Klong Prem prison. He had been arrested for passing forged travellers cheques in Bangkok and was sentenced to eight years imprisonment. After contracting tuberculosis, he became emaciated and lost half his teeth. Debbie, fearing he would not survive, ignored family advice and put her life on hold for six years so she could visit John and lobby endlessly for a Prisoner Exchange Treaty between Australia and Thailand to allow her brother to serve out his sentence in his home country. In 2003, John Doran became the first Australian prisoner to be transferred from Thailand to a Perth jail. Debbie was widely acknowledged for providing the crucial impetus for the ratification of the Prisoner Exchange Treaty, but her crusade brought with it significant financial, physical and emotional costs.
