I have one of those horrible 10 hour flights ahead in 2 weeks and just wondered what members do to pass the time ?

Mostly I travel on my own so if i'm stuck next to someone with little or no conversation I find it so hard to pass the time.

I have tried the movie watching, book reading, trying to sleep, getting drunk and it still drags, I even taught myself 101 card tricks on one journey.. The only thing I've found that really sorts me out now is having a few beers at the airport, a couple on the plane with my meal and then dropping a Temazepam. The woman next to me didn't like me dribbling on her shoulder last time but I got 8 hours and woke just as the wheels hit the tarmac in LOS feeling fresh as a daisy. Trouble is I've got no Temazepam for this journey only some Tramadol and I don't know if they will put me on the same bus. Shrug

So, how do you pass the time ??

Hi Mark,

Your Doctor will give you a couple of Temazepam, just tell him your a nervous flier, I know a few people who do that.

I cant sleep on a flight, so I just keep getting my glass topped up with white wine, and daydream of landing in LOS. Roll Eyes

Get up early on the day of the night flight...a couple of hours after take-off and I get a few ZZZZZZZ...

But never too much..I'm usually too excited and in the "are we nearly there yet" type of mood... Smiler

I usually have a few drinks beforehand and on the plane.

I can never usually sleep when I want to so I just wait and sometimes drop off but try not to worry about it.

For those who take tablets just try Nytol. I did try it once and it does work but I am not keen as it makes my dreams very vivid.

The films on Thai airways are usually enough to make me sleepy, however this time I am flying Eva so should have more choice.

Will take the same book I took last year to read, because I have not got any futher reading it in the year.

if i'm on emirates or virgin, then the in-flight entertainment systems work a treat. i even remember being so engrossed in a game of tetris (the one with shapes falling slowly down the screen that u have to move and rotate) that i was one of the last ones off the plane.

the more advanced systems let u play quizzes against other passengers (not always ideal, as sporting and tv questions can be geared toward americans - unjustifiably so, as the usa isn't a major market for emirates).

If no sleeping aids/drugs -

my tip/recipe for sleep on plane:

Avoid beer - too many ching chong visits, tend to de-hydrate more, and when u get the taste you need more - hence you go full circle.

Hence, a few large spicy Bloody Mary"s pre-flight - followed by some more (not too spicy) on board as the tomato juice helps to stop you from de-hydrating, with brandy chasers.

Exceed the stated dose until desired effect!

Bon voyage

Mark, if you struggle on the outward flight how on earth do you manage on the return flight ? At least going out there's the sense of excitement and anticipation but on the return flight there's nothing to look forward to at all.

Now I try and restrain a toddler for most of the time Cry

I tend to partially recline the seat, put the foot-rest right up, sip the gently chilled champagne, snack on the canapés before settling down to the sumptuous five-course gourmet meal. That takes up a few hours.

After finishing off the luxury cheeses and vintage port, recline the seat a little further and either take in a movie or perhaps the view from outside aircraft to wind away a couple of hours while continuing to sip the never-ending supply of champagne, cocktails, beers and wines being offered. When I'm done I'll then fully recline the seat to rest my eyes for a while until the ice cream sundae arrives, with yet more champagne. Then I might catch up on a little bit of work with a drink or two before the next meal arrives.

Between meals and the champagne/cocktails I take in a couple of litres of water - and a final bottle prior to landing to try to get re-hydrated.

Get off the plane nice and relaxed, if not a little merry and stroll to the arrival lounge to wait for the bags Wink

Drink whisky approx 1 bottle prior to boarding.
Apply sticker to bald patch on head requesting wake up call ten minutes before landing.
Continue to drink whisky until unconciousness achieved.

Snore Snore etc

Wake up take 2 paracetomol and drink gallons of water

Repeat on return journey Thumbs Up sorted

ash

Oh not recommended for flights under 1 hour especially if renting a car on arrival

I hope I never fly with any you guys on the inside seat. All those trips to the "bathroom" to give back those litres of fluid....permanent musical chairs!!
I use a patented drug cocktail....zopiclone is a short-acting sleeping aid available on prescription, taken with a piriton, an over the counter antihistamine which makes you drowsy. Washed down with a couple of glasses of wine. No fuzzy head on arrival and no trips to the "bathroom".

Crayons, colouring in books, cheap plastics toys, well that five minutes taken care of. Then it’s press all the buttons, switches , jump up and down on the seats. Have a look behind those curtains. Chat to the good looking flight attendants. Make faces at the other passengers.

Well, it’s a good job my kids are better behaved than me. Smiler

I normally sit back and watch a movie or two, Have a few drinks, try out the free grub and then fall asleep until Dubai. Then it's off the plane and get a McDonalds, scrub up and maybe follow it by a pint in the bar. Oh and stretch the old legs. Then back on board again and sit back and watch a movie or two, Have a few drinks, try out the free grub and then fall asleep until Bangkok. Upon nearing Bangkok, normally start to drift in and out of sleep.
But this time with a 3 year old with us, I'm sure she will keep us occupied (if not arguing by Dubai).

I'm flying Swiss. Just a quick hop from Brum to Zurich and then 10 hours to Bangkok. I'm fed up with Middle Eastern flights.

Ah, on the return it's usually a night flight so it's drink from about 5pm until time for boarding, I don't really care if I arrive back in the UK feeling sh**y.

Mark,

Looks like a common theme here "dlink"

Anyway I always go direct with Thai as I can't be bothered with stopovers (even with the cig break) so never mind the cost and my lady has adopted this method of LHR/BKK route and vice/versa :-
TG917/TG910 which is always booked up quicker than the TG911/TG916 option! Nod

I was sent an email today in work from west/east or is it east/west which gave a good price but stated you must travel on TG911 Roll Eyes

NB I have done TG911 twice and both times it was empty so I got 3 seats on the B747-400 alone so if thats your preference!!

I mean 2 pints is embarrassing Blush

Colin,
As you give your location as Essex then your not too far from Heathrow, I certainly would fly direct if they did a direct flight from Brum or Manchester, the trip down to Heathrow is just such a pain for me.
