Sorry, yet another request for advice! Does anyone have any up to date ideas for cheap car rental from Bangkok? QCars was mentioned on this forum - but their web site no longer exists. There is another thread dating back to 2006 which quotes prices as low as 400 Baht per day.
Having said "cheap", I would ideally like something with 4 wheels and an engine that will not disintegrate . . . Thanks. Ian |

actually it's not so bad, traffic moves so slowly just like when we learn to drive over here. so long as you know where you are going it's a doddle really i drive all the time except when i know i'll be drinking IanB remember to have a valid IDP if your gonna drive abroad not only incase you have an accident but incase you are involved in one |

I lived in Bangkok for two years from 1988 to 1990 and drove myself around all of the time. The direction signs are useless and I will not have a Thai navigator to help this time. But as long as you remember NEVER to look in your rear view mirror, its not too bad!

Ian, Used Thai Rent a Car in January - superb service and car was immaculately valeted and full of petrol on pick-up at airport. Paid 12000B for an Altis but got a free upgrade. Only fault was they double charged me on my visa and 4 months later still have not got it back, although have eventually got an apology and a promise of refund this week. I guess this can happen but the delay has been annoying. An advantage of airport drop-off even if not heading away on a flight is its a lot easier to find the airport than anywhere else !

Hello Steve with ref; to IanB Being a regular customer of Q Cars in BKK and after receiving an email about three months ago from their manager "Boat" that they were no longer trading! Could you tell me whether they are in fact trading in BKK? When I pulled the link from the other poster it came up with only the Pattaya site. Their service was excellent, I used to rent a Toyota Fortuner "their largest 4WD" from them at least two times a year for a minimum of 1 month at a time and they used to deliver the car and collect at the end of the time and all this "With negotiation" for about a 1000 baht a day. (Last rental perod was Jan to Feb 2008 Regards Harvey |

A warning,
I rented a motor in Korat not long ago and a very nice car too. Actually brand new and very cheap to run. ONE MAJOR PROBLEM We got robbed with with the cash deposit. Funny how little scratches appeared on return. Strange how the staff went straight to the damage almost as if they knew it was there. ??? CHECK THE CAR FIRST Also check the brakes etc. Maybe insist on a quick test drive. I did this in Samui not long ago with a Suz jeep and rejected the first one, but very cheap. |

Just received an email from John Fox of www.qcars.net/index.html]QCars who tells me that the BKK depot has closed down but that all bookings are now being done from Jomtien Pattaya. This means that I will still be able to collect a car from the driver at the airport and leave it there after use. I am pleased that they are still up and running because I have a lot of confidence in their service. |

Indeed Harvey,my link to QCars was with the Jomtien venue in mind and I knew they operated airport collection/delivery.
There is also a place in Naklua, but I havn't been able to locate the details yet. Steve aka Rolyshark |

Just come back from Thailand. I used Thai rent a car via Fastcarhire.co.uk.
We hired a Toyota Fortuner SUV (3ltr Diesel) it was excellent, we picked it up from Don Muang and they picked it up from our hotel in Hua Hin. Probably the best Car i have driven, pretty quick and resonable MPG. We had it fitted with Sat Nav and Child seat. it wasnt cheap but well worth it |

Hello Zohak You mention satnav in your post. What make was it and did it cover all of Thailand? I heard some time ago that there was a Garmin available for LOS but have not heard anything since Thanks Harvey |

Hello Steve you will probably have read between the lines why I asked the question. One of QCars Ex-staff sent me an email basically telling me that QCars had shut down and that if I needed any car hire to contact him back direct at his email address. John Fox the owner of QCars explained in his email that this info was completely wrong and that for possibly apparent reasons all customers who previously dealt with BKK office would now be accomodated from their Pattaya office. Regards Harvey |

Not surprised Harvey. I do know several "independant" car hire places in Pattaya, which are a lot cheaper than QCars. I wouldn't necessarily recommend them on the forum though

Cant remember what sat nav unit it was I think it was a Garmin.
The only trouble I found with it was it didnt recognise street names very well in english or thai. - This wasnt as bad as it seems, as when we drove from Udon Thani to Hua Hin I just picked any old address in Hua hin until I got close enough to use the search accomadation function to find the hotel (very handy) |
