My ex has kindly offered to lend me the family car when I am over there. It is insured, and she assures me that the insurance will cover any driver. That souns a little u nlikely to me.
Does anyone know if Thai car insurance sometimes includes cover for any driver? Can anyone suggest a way to buy cover for myself for just one week. I do not have insurance in the UK as I have a company car. Thanks. Ian |

Thai insurance often covers the car irrespective of who drives it. My car insurance (Thai) covers any driver. Let's face it, as drivers, they're all as bad as each other so who cares who's behind the wheel. Paul พอล เข้าเมืองตาหลิ่วต้องหลิ่วตาตาม |

I'd second what Paul says - my car insurance in Thailand for the last 8 years has always been on an any driver basis. Not even sure they ever gave a named driver basis as an option.

So would insurance like that ever actually cover any losses if you hit anything or anyone? Difficult to see how it could. |

Just in case, maybe I should buy an amulet and get a tattoo? Ian |

I have heard it said that standard thai insurance does not cover a farang driver. I have no proof to offer, nor any idea how to cover a farang driver. Maybe a thai person could read the policy and check for you?

Make sure you have your UK licence with you also your International drivers Permit or you will not be covered.
Just like insurance everywhere they will get out of paying if they can, I'm there Bryn |

With a policy from a reputable company it does indeed. I guess the difference here is with things like labour charges which are going to be closer to 60 baht/hour than £60/hour. I'd also echo what Bryn says about holding a valid license, that will be checked. Pgcon's statement "standard thai insurance does not cover a farang driver" is nonsense if the farang holds a valid license. Paul พอล เข้าเมืองตาหลิ่วต้องหลิ่วตาตาม |

Not too sure I would agree with that. So far I have had the good fortune of not having to deal with them directly myself, but I know quite a few people who have. Haven't heard of one instance yet were they have tried to wheedle out of it. If you require marijuana..... press the hash key. |

Don't forget there are several classes of insurance.
Class 1 covers everything. My wife buys the cheapest,6800 baht, which only covers passengers for hospital bills in event of an accident. Car tax must also be up to date. |

not sure if this is any more help for you but when i asked a local car hire company in KKC about insurance this was their reply e-mail.
Hi Ian, Thanks for your email, the insurance cover is as required in Thailand. I would not describe it as "comprehensive" as in the UK. In the two and a half years that I have been involved with car rents in Khon Kaen we have not had any problems with insurance issues. I believe that Budget and Avis car rental companies offer a "comprehensive" ugrade for hirers of their vehicles at a premium price but at this time it is not available from us, or from any other of the independent vehicle hire companies here in Khon Kaen. If I can be of further assistance please contact me again at this email. |
