The allowance used to be 30kg in economy/coral class and 40kg business/pearl. When we last used Etihad (November and December 2007) the economy class baggage allowance was 20kg and business class 30kg. Check-in were enforcing the baggage allowance at both Manchester and Bangkok.

If you have an Etihad Silver Card you get an additional 10kg and with Gold an extra 15kg allowance.

There isn't an easy answer as some tickets are issued with 20 kgs and some 30kgs in economy class, I suppose it depends on what class of ticket you were issued with ( I don't mean class as in business etc)
As you enquire with your travel agent as to which dates you want to travel, ask the baggage allowance for that price of ticket.

And ask them to confirm it in writing - excess baggage is EXPENSIVE.

Check your ticket and if there is no mention of what your particular limit is assume it is 20kg. It won't hurt to check with Etihad or your travel agent. Many airlines have changed their baggage policy in recent times - and needless to say, such changes have not been to the passenger's advantage.

Back in March the allowance was 20Kg for economy (30kg for the silver level on the guest scheme) no problems outbound as I did not take too much, coming back I had 33kg and Anna had 24kg but they did not say anything, or weigh the hand luggage. But as Tobias said this may not be the case now, with the fuel inceases etc.

95% of the luggage was clothes for Anna as she was coming to the UK for the first time (most of my holiday stuff was left with her nephew in BKK to use on our return).

When we came back from Thailand in December, Jenny flew business class and had 47kg of luggage, she was asked to pay excess baggage as she was 17kg over. I asked them to use my baggage allowance too but they couldn't - I was stopping in Dubai on business on the way back whereas Jenny was simply connecting and going straight home - it was only when she flashed her Etihad Gold Card was the excess baggage charge waived.

The lesson to be learned here is if they are enforcing the baggage policy on business class passengers they will certainly be enforcing it on economy class passengers. If you do decide to take more than your allowance be prepared for (a) a hefty excess baggage charge or (b) be ready to remove some belongings and leave them behind.

With hand luggage too, do be careful. I travel a great deal through airports at the moment and on more than one occasion in recent months I have seen airlines weighing cabin baggage too, at check-in and at the gate! Be warned.

Smoking shouldn't be a problem in Abu Dhabi any more - they now have a no smoking policy and provide smoking rooms.
