Hi all,

As from my previous post, Yao passed her UK driving test yesterday, once she gets her license back from DVLA can she apply for International Driving License.

We are of to Thailand 18/72008 for 4 weeks,

Yao did not drive till she came here, is it worth her getting her Thai license if there is time to achieve this?
I would assume that if easily achieved she would be better driving under a Thai license.

Last question is it worth me trying to get a Thai driving license for the future and possible doing at the same time as Yao?

Almost certainly. If she presents her UK driving license she may be exempt from sitting the theory and practical tests in Thailand.

Technically you need to be either Thai or resident in Thailand to get a Thai driving license. For foreigners, a letter from Thai immigration confirming such or presentation of your yellow Tabian Baan is required. That said, rules in Thailand are interpreted differently wherever you go. It won't hurt to ask at the Driving Centre.

Paul,
We will be up your way in a few weeks time and i want to apply for a thai license, can this be done in Khon Kaen or do i have to go back Bangkok ?

I have got full car & bike UK entitlement on my license and have also an IDP.Which i understand bypasses the need to take a driving test in LOS and just the eye and reaction tests req.

Correct?

I will entering on a Non 'O' single entry and staying at MILs home, can she make guarantee for me at local amphur as proof of address?

Or do i have to go to Nong Khai immigration for an Alien Residence Cert?

What did you do?

thanks Thumbs Up

Khon Kaen has a fully functional driving test centre, there's no need to go to Bangkok.

I have a Tabian Baan (yellow) in my name so didn't need a Certificate of Residence. You can get a Certificate of Residence from Nong Khai or Korat immigration. I think you need the home owner with you - with their ID card and tabian baan (blue) - to grant you permission to stay there.

Yes, only the eye and reaction test needed, plus a medical certificate which costs around 30 baht from a quack in town. Plus, of course, the fee ... and don't forget your UK driving license.

If you've not held a Thai driving license before, your first one will only be for 1 year. After that they're dated for 5 years plus, up to the date of your next birthday. My birthday is in April and I renewed my first license in May so I'll get nearly 6 years out of it this time around.

Regards

Travelling from Khon Kaen or Udon thani, following the signs for the bridge, Nong Khai immigration is a kilometre or so before the bridge on the right hand side of the road.

I wouldn't recommend downloading and printing these out as the nice [sic] chap at NK immigration will probably throw them back in your face and make you fill out new ones, but here they are so you know what to ask for ....

Notification Form for House Master, Owner, or the Possessor of The Residence Where Aliens Have Stay (TM.30)

Application Form for Residence Certificate in Thailand
