Hi all

Pook and I are getting married when I next go to Thailand in late October/early November. I want to take her somewhere really nice - but not too touristy. Anyone have suggestions for areas/hotels ? It doesn't necessarily have to be in LOS itself, but could be a nearby country (Pook has never left Thailand).
All contributions gratefully received (and I don't just mean ideas either LOL )

Singapore (sorry biased), or Bali, not too far and lots of cheap flights. Or maybe a bit of both.

I would also vote for Singapore - it is a great contrast to Bangkok. Full of excellent places to eat. Touristy things include Sentosa Island, the zoo, and the bird zoo (where you can have breakfast on a veranda surrounded by birds.

If you really want to make a trip of it you could consider going one way by train - it takes two nights and a day I think. Comfy train rumbling through the countryside. Cool beer on hand (on the Thai bit anyway - not sure about Malaysian railways).

You can self-publicize all you want. It's exactly what I want, some real opinions on nice places - after all, everything looks good on a website advert and its so hard to choose.
By the way, I was actually born in Singapore (Changi hospital) - the old man was in the RAF - so Singapore could be a splendid idea - not been back there since the '80s. Can you still get cheap computer stuff there ? I seem to remember the Funan Centre (MY shopping trip) LOL

Not the last few times we've been, no big chain hotels, lots of nice secluded beaches as below - Klong Prao Beach. There is a little night life dotted around here and there if you want to find it that is, nothing major though.... we did find a Thai style disco one night called 'skybar' which was pretty amusing - I think I was the only farang in the place Big Grin

I vote for singapore too, great place, great food, great weather and not bad people either Cool

Or hong kong maybe? Never been but heard it's a very lively place, perfect for a honeymoon I would have thought

Hi John,

Yes the Funan centre is still here and Simlim Square for a more 'aggressive' selling approach with some bartering.

Hotel wise, this is my favourite hotel in Singapore but not the cheapest. Tell them its your honeymoon and you were born in Singapore and see the result.

Royal Plaza

Cheaper hotels are like the Hotel 81 chain. I've never stayed but they look clean and good value from the outside. (I think there can be a little 'coming and going' at certain times Wink)

Hotel 81
Apart from all the restaurants on Clarke Quay and Boat Quay there are two great new restaurants at Robertson walk on Mohamed Sultan Road, one 'fusion' food, one the best Japanese food I have had anywhere, including Japan. The best Thai food is at Golden Mile (you need to go 'round the back', Tuk Tuk is variable quality and not spicy, all the Singapore people go there): there is a Thai disco there in the basement most nights and especially weekends, when it can involve the local constabulary as the Chang sets in.

I also endorse Bar None in the basement of the Marriott Hotel, haven't been for a while but the music is usually great and good atmosphere. Brix in the basement of the Hyatt hotel is also good but I don't like the music so much.

Enjoy yourself wherever you go (I'm sure you will Roll Eyes

Dan.

Yes you're right Dan, I was there a couple of weeks ago and the thai lady loved it. So much so that she uprooted me from the bar and made me sit at the front so she could see and hear the band better Cool

Definately not for singapore. The length of time is open to the discretion of the immigration officer as you go through passport control. my girlfriend was stamped in for 30 days the same as me, probably because they could see she was with me (and not a single girl off to work at orchard towers? Roll Eyes). I believe they could also give a stamp for 7 or 14 days if they so choose, but if you're on your honeymoon I don't see any problems getting the 30.

I don't think you need one for hong kong either, we nearly went there instead of singapore and the gf said she didn't need a visa when I told her to check (not sure how reliable this is, I'd double check on the hong kong immigration site if I was you)

Johnny is right. Same for Hong Kong. If accompanied then she will almost certainly get 30days, especially as this is her first trip abroad.

If you choose Singapore, then you could combine it with Koh Samui as there are flights from there to Singers.

Thanks Upcountry. I have been up north quitre a few times, but never to Pai. Pook is currently choosing between Singapore and a nice beach resort (she wants it busy rahter than quiet). So I think Pai will have to wait - but I'll definitely put it on my list of places to go.
