I've decided to make a last minute visit and will fly out to LOS in a couple of weeks. Normally I'd stay in Kata for the relative peace with Patong being a quick TukTuk trip away.

Is Kata maybe going to be a little too quiet at this time of year?

Jamie,

we were there this time last year. Hotel was full (or so the reception told us) but was still peaceful.

I guess it depends what kind of beach you like. We found it quiet - there were the usual vendors who were polite and took 'mai kop khun' for an answer but nothing like Patong. No jet skis, boat-glider or other such nuicances.
Short of being on a desert island, there's no such thing as beach 'too quiet' for me. Smiler

Quite a few surfers due to strong tide at this time of year (monsoon). The place to be if you're into it.

Oh, and beautiful, beautiful sunsets.

Enjoy.

It looks like it will be a solo trip for me because Kookkai may not be able to get any time off her work in BKK and I'm not yet in a position to ask her to risk her job for me. So I will be looking for something to do in the evenings if I go to Phuket. What I mean is I will be looking for some activity in the evenings for a wee drink and a gibber (hope most of you understand scottis!).

Kookkai is being asked to a lot of overnights in the hospital just now otherwise I'd be quite happy to stay in BKK and see her in the evenings. I suppose in a while I'm going to have to be a little bit insistent on working out a plan for us to have some time. The only problem is that I am springing it on her to a certain extent that I will be turning up in less than 2 weeks.

Why would you want to go to Phuket if your lady is in Bkk?? Or is that a stupid question?

Paul, I'm not sure if I know the answer to that myself. My job situation this year hasn;t been good which has meant that I had to take a "filler" job to pay the mortgage while I looked for something better....

I have been getting the when are you coming back to Thailand questions to which I've had to answer that I didn't know. Now I have managed to find the job and decided I'm going to go out to BKK before I start. Now fo reasons I don't want to go into in detail Kookkai needs all the money she can get and I wont be in any real position to help for a till I manage to sell the flat where I am just now and move. Now hopefully I will be able to persuade her to take some time off or at least miss out on some overtime. When I told her I could make plans to come out she could only say she was "busy" which I'm sure comes down to her money worries.

Now some people could argue that I could use the money I'm going to spend on the holiday to help her but right now I think it's more important that I try and get to see her again.

Jamie I understand part of your logic, but if it were me I would be in Bkk with her. A few snatched hours has got to better than getting leathered and talking b*ll*cks with strangers in bars.

Jamie,
My advice stay with Kookkai and have a BKK hol if she is busy! Do not go Phuket but as they say "up to you"
All the best in what you decide!

Up to you in these cases mostly means: if you want do it but don't ask me to accept it

But then they won't say that

Jamie,

If you're alone and just want a bit of quiet (sit on the beach chilling or reading), then I'd recommend it.

If you want to spend time in bars with other westerners, then perhaps stay in the UK Patong is your best bet.

We hired a car as it is out of the way.

Choke dee.

WARNING SIGNS!!! Eeker Eeker

When a Thai lady says that to you it normally means either:-
"My other falang boyfriend is in town!" Wink
or "My Thai husband is in town!" Wink

Warning signs mate.. a Thai lady will move heaven and earth to see the one she loves...not say she is too busy!! Nod

Yes, WARNING everyone. WARNING!! WARNING!! WARNING!!

<s>
Chris is extremely well travelled, knows every conceivable detail about Thai culture, speaks the language fluently and is qualified to advise on the intentions other people's partners. Also, his widely applied hypothesis that anyone who hasn't been with their partner this side of the Berlin Wall falling can't possibly be in a serious relationship is extremly well founded.
</s>

Chris, for goodness sake, engage your brain and analyse the situation. Is Kookai really going to pull a fast one when Jamie's in LOS. If she has such intentions, surely she would do so the remaining ~98% of the year whent they're apart.

If you take the time to read Jamie's previous post , he mentioned that Kookai needs to earn money for her own reasons. I would interpret that as a reason to have to work. Without knowing those reasons, it is foolish to try and comment on her reasons for not wanting to holiday in Phuket.

So, why not take the time to read posts a little more than just spread your conjecture all over the forums at the first opportunity.

Making totally unfounded and foolish remarks about other people's relationships does not make you look knowledgable. (certainly not in my eyes)

Update.....

It looks like I'm going to be kicking my heels during the day and meeting up with Kookkai in the evenings. Judging by the surprise in her voice when I called her to announce I will arrive in BKK on.... she must have completely missed the point of what I was trying to tell her before.

Now I need to work out a lot of stuff to do during the day either in BKK or within a day trip's range. Any ideas people esp. ideas that are not the ones that "everyone does"

Having seen Bang Rajan I I'd like to go up and see the monument and visitor centre. Is it do-able in a day, even if it means an early start and finding a good cabbie a couple of days before?

Right ok people, can we please keep this thread on topic. I really don't want this turning into yet another version of the numerous threads I've seen on these boards in the 2 and a bit years I've been a member.

So if anyone can come up with good day trips for me that are not necessarily the obvious ones please post.

Excellent Jamie, have you tried Ayuttaya for the day, it is completely do-able on the train (I know from personal experience).

I've done the organised tour on the bus and back by boat but found it a bit rushed. This time I think I've also got the opportunity to drag myself to the weekend market especially now I've worked out it's right at the end of the skytrain.

If you're talking about JJ's, make it an early one, I get dragged round regular and after 11 am it gets increasingly congested and uncomfortable.

Rent a boat and do a trip through the klongs of Bangkok Noi (sp?). Fascinating and takes a few hours if the boatman is up for it.
