Next month I have arranged a date with A Thai girl I have met on the Web. She is an accountant and has taken the day of work to meet me.

I do not know bangkok too well and am a bit at a loss as to where to take her for a day out.

Any ideas.

Richard

Vimanmek, the teak palace. Very calm and peaceful, interesting museum with lots of stuff about Chula, plenty of gardens.

Afternoon tea, or dinner, at the Oriental.

Shopping at Siam Paragon - has the Ocean World place too.

All assuming she's not just after your body, of course.

Blimey! That little lot would cost me about a month's wages! And that's without the shopping at Paragon! I hope this girl is worth it!

You could also just go for the cinema, a stroll round Lumpini, and perhaps finish off with noodles on a wobbly plastic stool in the street?

I mean, start off as you mean to go on!

(But don't listen to my advice, the last time I had a date with anyone was in June 2000, and look where that got me! LOL)

Vimanmek is free if you've been to the Grand Palace, probably about a quid otherwise - Richard's on holiday, he can splash out! (Window!) shopping is also free!

Too cold! (and can't talk - though it doesn't necessarily stop the locals ....)

LOL

Glad you appreciated that my suggestion wasn't entirely serious!

Tell you what though, a frezing cold cinema might be a very good thing for Richard's upcoming date, especially in one of those VIP double seats with a couple of blankets thrown in!

there's always the zoo and the aquarium. Shopping and eating at MBK. (Not too expensive). Pratanum market is even better!

Alternatively why not ask her to suggest something.

Night time you could always sit outside Gullivers and watch bangkok go by to a nice meal or maybe a dinner on a river boat.

Should we all dust off our top hats? hehe! LOL

If the date lasts into evening then Titanium in Sukhumwit 22 might be worth a quick look.

The main bar is ok but the "Ice Bar" upstairs should be an experience for her. When I took a Thai friend there she certainly liked it. Mind you the poor girl had arms like sandpaper with the goosepimples on the way out.

EDIT: It's Phrom Phong Skytrain if I remember rightly.

There is only a very small part of Bangkok which passes by Gulliver's, and only a small fraction of the population who would feel comfortable there. I would say that even knowing where it is might not go down too well with most professional Thais. Same goes for Titanium and Soi 22.

I would avoid lower Sukhumvit completely - where are you staying, Richard? How old is the woman and how worldly wise does she seem?

There is only a very small part of bangkok passes by anywhere in bangkok.

Joy and I go to gullivers because we like the food, and because it's lovely on a warm evening to sit outside by the fountain and relax. No need for copious amounts of booze, just a chance to relax. It's quiet enough to converse and it's peaceful. And yes it's nice to watch the comings and goings of tourists, pavement sellers and the odd elephant.

However I agree if being associated with the lower end of Sukhumvit is embarrassing then try the river boat.

Our hotel, the Woraburi is in the lower end of sukhumvit. Probably the best and friendliest hotel I have stayed at in Bangkok. The staff are like old friends now and we won't stay anywhere else. We don't however feel the need to visit the Neon areas just because they happen to be nearby.

I hear what you are saying GTG, but we have dined at gullivers with a Thai friend of mine, an estate agent. She didn't seem too embarressed to be there. In fact she rather enjoyed her first experience of Spaghetti bolognaise.

Or how about,

Baiyoke Sky Restaurant Baiyoke Sky Hotel
77th Fl., 222 Rajprarop Rd. Tel: 656-3000 Open: 11am-2pm, 6pm-11pm.

After the meal go right to the top on the revolving platform. Certainly romantic and not bad view of Bangkok from the 77th floor whilst your eating and the 85th afterwards. Eeker

Richard next time you chat to her let it be known that you are not familiar with bangkok and suggest that she might be the better person to choose your first date. Nod being an accountant she should be penny (baht)thrifty.which ever way you go hope you enjoy goodluck

When i had my first date with my now thai wife ( who incidentally is an accountant too )i asked her to choose what to do and she booked us an evening river dinner cruse. i suspect if we had been meeting earlier we might well have gone for a stroll in the emporium and gone upstairs to se a film and then gone to the river or possibly gone to the aquarium in siam paragon rather than the movie.

It's probably a combination of a bit of "barrel distortion" and the angle of view...(where the photo was taken from)

Basically, using a wide-angle lens angles converge or lean one way or the other.

I'd never heard of that before but I'm sure on more than one occasion I've had "beer barrel distortion"

I've never noticed that before! have to say it's a really strange phenomenum. Perhaps I'm seeing it in all pictures now, but am I wrong that in the first picture by Mark, the building next to it seems to be leaning towards the tower. Am I just seeing things now? Crazy

I can honestly say the buildings look straighter to the naked eye, unless of course as stated, "beer barrel distortion" kicks in.
