What's wrong with Koh Samet? I reckon it's the best island you can go to. Especially with the in-laws! (Mind you, I haven't been there for a few years)

As ever... my wife & I have found it a lot of fun, especially with older childrenw (who can ride motor bikes etc.). The people have been v. good to us (just the luck of the draw I guess).
It is getting too expensive & it is getting dirtier (glass on the rocks etc.) but I still like it. Apart from those points it doesn't change much at all. 1 week feels like one month there (in a good way!) so I wouldn't go for too long. We like Hat Sai Kaew as it's busy & you can pop off to any of the quieter beaches when you feel like it. They basically get quiter the further down the Island you go. I've been all over & there are some very pretty little beaches. A good place to chil within easy reach of Bangkok. Steve

HI i wasn't saying anythings negative about it honest, As never been there. really just want to know if it ideal with very young kids. As we also thought about going to Cha am where I could stay in a very posh hotel for the prices they are quoting on Samet.

If your kids love the beach and sea it is great, otherwise not much else for them to do. Safe as there is no traffic. Accomodation is expensive for what it is, but the place is very laid back if that is what you like.

Stayed here just before Christmas and the rooms were great, restaurant too. http://www.samedvilla.com/Only drawback, beach is tiny and completely floods at high tide but I always walk along to strip by the mermaid. Took my mum and she was happy as anything (they do a family bungalow which is split into 2 with separate bathrooms and front door which was great for us and mother). German owned (very pleasant) and they apparently don't accept non-couple/family bookings, or so someone told my mother. Short stroll to parade of beach restaurants, 7-11 not too far and has a more private feel to it as it's at the end of the main drag. I'd recommend it.

It's good to read that there are still some farangs on Samed who retain a degree of modesty - assuming the mermaid doesn't mind! Your recommendation brings back heaps of memories as Samed Villas was the staff weekend retreat when I first started teaching in Thailand. Straight out of the door on Friday afternoon, into a private minibus and we were eating dinner on the beach by 7. Oh dear, I think I'm going to cry ..... It was always a cut above - I think back then it was the only place that had its own generator so wasn't affected by the regular power cuts in the afternoons. Looking at the website it has clearly been upgraded over the last 13 years!

should have read...walk to THE strip....where it would be possible to strip if so inclined but that might distract the kick-box gym which now overlooks the recently repainted mermaid and her paramour
