Andy
Have just booked into the Lek for Christmas, 850 Baht per room.

Have not stayed here before but has been highly recommended. I checked out a room and appeared to be nice and clean, good shower (in bath), TV, Fridge & Air con.

It all looked OK and as having a month here hope it will be Smiler.

I have stayed in the Diana Inn in Pattaya and the main road outside reminded me of the old frogger game. If you stay in that part of town watch out when crossing the road esp. after a few drinks (same goes for any other I suppose).

AA and Sawasdee Sea View both basic clean hotels, you get what you pay for. The Lek is a bit more luxurious but I have never rated the staff there with one or two exceptions.
Crossing Second road is an art, the first day or two it is scary but you soon adjust and find it is quite easy really. Just pick your gap and keep going steadily, don't stop and start let the traffic see where you are headed and they will avoid you.

Must have been lucky with the receptionist and the porter who showed us the room then as they were both very helpful and pleasant. Hope I am not in for a rough stay.

Quite agree.
The other alternative I found was just get plastered between Beach road and Second road and don't bother crossing it Big Grin

Look on the sawadee.com website at the Areca Lodge Soi Diana in my opinion the best value hotel I have stayed at in over 25 visits to Thailand I have paid 3 times as much and had half the hotel it is clean with two lovely pools very child friendly and an awesome buffet eat as much as you like breakfast rooms good sized and priced at 1000 baht if you don't believe me read the reviews on the website hope this helps.

The Areca is great. I didn't recommend it as it was not less than a thousand. Note it is only 1000 in the quiet season it is dearer the reat of the year.

i like the areca also, but dragging my 4 year old along soi diana and crossing 2nd road filled me with dread,so iam considering shelling out for the dusit, its got a private beach also,so i dont have to fend off awkward questions regarding men in womens clothes everytime we go the beach.

i do, we went hua hin a few years ago, it is very child friendly. the hilton was 6000baht walk in rate but had a great dinner buffet for only 600 baht per person.

we stayed opposite the hilton in a cheap guesthouse for 800baht, no breakfast though.

I would agree Hua Hin is great for kids. but I find it amusing that the Hilton area is reccomnded as you are talking Soi Bintabat and Soi Selekam which are the centre of the red light district. Wink

I am sure it is great for the dads Thumbs Up

Just don't turn down the above soi (there's 3/4 in that area with plenty of bars) and the Hilton area is fine. And amongst those bars in that grid, there are many family friendly places.
