Hi,

I've been to Cha-Am quite a few times, and it makes an enjoyable break.

It gets VERY busy at the weekends (inc Friday night), with weekend trippers from Bangkok. The resort caters primarily for Thai Tourists, I think Hua-Hin about 30KM further south is more popular with foreign visitors.

Main activity is sitting under umbrellas in deck-chairs on the beach, while a procession of food/drink vendors pass by. A few watersports options such as JetSki's or Banana Boats are popular.

Bicycles can be hired to explore the surrounding area, they come in single/double/triple/quad configurations !

We like the 'Kaenchan Beach Hotel' It's meduim sized, friendly and decent value and a good restaurant (seafood recommended of course).

There are lots of other cheaper bungalow style places, who would probably offer a good discount during the week when it's quiet.

Be careful if booking accomodation over the internet in advance, there are many 'resort style' places between Cha-Am and Hua Hin, that are not actually close to the town and could leave you isolated without transport.

Hope this helps,

GW

claw(may i call you that?)

my recc is beach garden hotel cha amm which as the name suggests is on the beach and the g/f was the only thai i saw other than staff (not sure if you mean western or thai family involved)

You can walk round the gardens or straight on the beach but this is a non activity hotel (jetski etc further up beach)

the beach front restaurant does thai food and uk stuff ie pizza/burgers/chicken etc so i think good for families and the breakfast the usual buffet .

If you want trips out there is plenty but you have to get taxi/drive to areas but not bad and nightlife is Hua Hin up the road as not much in hotel.

I and g/f enjoyed resort in dec 2005 and we have booked for mar 2006 so maybe see you there!

My wife to be is Thai and we got two kids together. Smiler

To honest she doesn't want to go to a popular foreign resort for the obvious reasons. Also my old dear will be coming to and May wants her new mother-in-law not to see the less favourable side of thailand resort life....

We have just got back (today) from a day in Hau Hin followed by 10 Days in Cha-Am. Also had a long weekends there two weeks previous and the weekend before that. We love it. It will be our ‘local seaside’ when we finally settle in our BKK.house...later this year.

Hau Hin is nice but the beach is too hot for many Thais, no trees whereas Cha-Am has many, many trees and is much cooler.

Yes there are beach sellers, but polite, as you would expect, and no problem. They sell both food and cloths. If you want, the deck chair owners will fetch you food and drink. We got to know one quite well, she looked after the deckchairs whilst her husband had the jet ski and banana boat….100baht each for a ride on the banana boat..did it nearly every day..great fun. Plenty of sand etc.

It is ‘full’ of foreigners, Holland, Belgium, Denmark etc those countries must be empty! We got to know a few of them..they go there each year for 2-3 months…to escape the cold. Of course its cheap for them.

Hotels.. Golden Beach 1500Baht weekdays and 1700 Baht weekends, Golden Sands think 2500Baht, Methavalia is really nice 3500Baht+10% +7% metha220@loxinfo.co.th

Talking to a tour rep. it appears that they may be able to get you a good deal. Nowadays it appears that sending your wife in to price the accomodation is not much of an advantage..well it saved us a couple of hundred baht a day.

The Methavalia..There the sea breeze (when there is one) blows through the restaurant, we go there some evenings, have a drink and watch the cabaret. Its quite impressive. We have also used a 800Baht a night hotel, it was clean, satalite TV, hot shower etc. We are out nearly all day so its fine for us. (I’m 60 and Sue is 50).

Poom Restaurant, about 100M from Golden Sands Hotel is where we usually eat, Local Thais frequent it so it must be good.

At the weekend it is alive..Thais come down from BK..This w/e and today was a holiday. It was thriving at 6:30am...Had a job finding a Bangkok Post!

If you want any more info pm me. We return to UK mid March.
