Nong Khai isn't far. Nong Khai market is worth a visit with views of the Friendship Bridge and Laos across the river. Also a trip to Sala Keo Kou - ศาลาแก้วกู่. It's a Hindu-Buddhist temple on the edge of Nong Khai with an impressive garden full of giant statues.

As for hotels, the Ban Chiang and Charoensri Grand Royal are both nice and possibly have an edge on the Charoen.

Book via the internet if possible as the rack rates can be a bit high at the Ban Chiang

Yeah Nong Khai - the wife has relative there and we have been meaning to get there - so yes may have to go on the list.

Especially as I always wanted to see the bridge that my Australian Tax payer Dollars help pay for!! Cool

We stayed at the Charoensri Grand Royal Hotel a couple of weeks back. Nice place, beautiful marble bathroom, the walls could have done with a lick of paint, but it was good for the money.

It's centrally located, attached to the shopping centre, near the night market, bars, bus station etc.

Self edit: Doh, you sneaked in with your post above, seeing as you just remembered got married there, you don't need me to tell you about it. Smiler

Not sure where the train station is mate, however, just about opposite the hotel there's a bar called Mr Tongs, near that, there's a little walk through to a small soi with the Aussie Bar, Patrick's Bar etc, around 10 bars I reckon.

Not sure if there's anything new in Udon, no time to explore, out everyday to Mam's village. Back most evenings, only to go to the food market, then the bars.

Train Staion further along behind those bars (and across the road)

if you go to the bottom of the road on which the charoensri hotel is on there is an excellent Carabao club.

Not many farang in there, which I quite like and the music is great as they have a live band most nights.

bottles of whisky (100 pipers of course!) are cheap as well.

I will try to remember the name but you cant miss it as it looks like and old western saloon.

Always go there when in Udon. I can also recommend the Car hire opposite as well, it is owned by the polic chief, we had his big 4x4 last time. We use these all the time and they pick us up from the airport. if you need the number for them PM me

Thanks Zohak - have hired cars from them before.

The MRS's family are friends with him( Some Police and ex Police in our family)
"The Family" likes the Karaoke behind "the hotel with the ghosts" and also the Restaurant with Karaoke upstairs

- so the "Carabo Bar" will make a nice change.

Thanks Maokanng PAUL for the info will take a look
