If you can ride a bike or drive, take a loop from chiang mai - pai- mae hon song back to chiang mai. Takes about 3 or 4 days depending on how long you stay at pai and mae hong son.

Its a beautiful drive i dont care much for pai but its worth a stopover and theres some nice scenery - but mae hone son is really nice...take a coat or jumperand its cold there at night....

Fantastic drive: take it easy around the mountains Eeker and make sure you have a full tank of gas

Mae Hong Son's a great place to stay for a few days. It's a sleepy town, well it was when I went 3/4 years ago. Around the lake it's really beautiful and peaceful. Try and get up at 5 one morning and go to the temple overlooking the town to see the morning mist.

I would definitely say you need transport whether it be a motor-cycle or a car. We went exploring to find the Long Neck village one day and ended up visiting the fish caves and a spa off the beaten track along the way.

I would also recommend staying at the Fern Resort, tranquil and spectacular setting and you get to go and a trek in the forest behind the resort led only by a dog!!!
