Does anyone know Koh Chang? Is it worth a week's holiday? My "plan A" was to go to the Hua Hin area for a week, but because my ex is in Koh Chang I was thinking of visiting there.

In particular, how is it likely to be in August? Is this a place that catches the rain?

If I want to make a short trip, how long does it take from Bangkok? Is there any way of getting from Trat province to Hua Hin directly?

Thanks for any help, tips, and advice.

Ian

Ian, will you be with a 'travelling companion' of the female variety on this trip? If so, how would IanG react? Could it be an issue?

So far Iang is happy about that. She has accepted that she will never want to come back to me and therefore she wants me to be happy. Also my gf is ok about it. But obviously I will have to monitor the situation closely as Iang is so changeable! Probably not a good idea to stay in the hotel where she works! Maybe the next beach down!

Hi Ian I spent a week on Koh Chang at Christmas. We stayed at the White Sands Beach Resort. Very quiet yards from the beach and a short stroll down the beach to the center of the bay. The centre of the bay is full of places to eat and drink. A couple of places have live music. It has a hippy vibe to it. The whole set up is a million times smaller than Hua Hin. You want peace and tranquility you got it. Travelling round the island did not seem easy. You would need a scooter each as the hills are steep and I did not notice any effective baht bus system.

Da and myself stayed at Cookies hotel on the beach. Very nice accomidation with a pool over looking the beach. Sorry i can`t remember which beach but it was the nicest one we saw while we where there. We took the pick-up, the taxi drivers will try to push you off the road so you need to stay tucked in to the left as much as possible on the bends. Nice Island to spend time on but we wanted to go after 4 days (we are not really beach people). Much better than our stay at Sammet!
We stayed in August just gone and the weather was HOT and sunny at most times. The hotel was at cheap rate 1500 ish a night. http://www.kohchangreservation.com/hotel/cookieshotel/#accommodation i dont think the link works but i`m sure you can find it. There are two parts to this hotel, we stayed on the beach part.

hope this helps Paul

We went last year and stayed at a place at White Sands called KC Grande Resort. Great place, seem to remember the prices on the website being a lot more than what we actually paid...

Very calm place, actually one of my favorite places, great seafood place on the beach, there is a little fishing village too on the other side of the island built on stilts in the sea.

We stayed 3 years ago in a bungalow on the beach, but it was in December. The motorbike hire is very cheap and enjoyable, but it is true the taxis can force you off the road. It happened to me on the last day, I still have the scars (literally).
My wife is telling me to remind you it could be very wet in August and the roads would therefor be dangerous as they are very steep in places, as stated in an earlier reply.
That said we had a fantastic time hope you do too.

It sounds very tempting. Only issues are the rainy season (Koh chang seems to get it much worse than the upper South), and whether ex wife will still be happy to see me!

I am thinking perhaps of three nights in Koh Chang followed by six or seven in Sam Roi yot - although that will mean a big drive of around six or seven hours in one day. As least at Sam Roi Yot I would be within reach of Hua Hin and Cha Am for rainy days.
